Adding remote unlocking/locking...95 850 to 96 850?

Post by SonicAdventure » Sat Oct 19, 2019 11:35 pm

Stumbled across a rare opportunity today at Harry’s U Pull It in Allentown, PA - a 95 850 sedan with remote unlock with the OEM fob and the sensor unit still in the car. Bought both of them and was hoping to use in my 96.

I watched RSPI’s video about locating the sending unit. I pulled my glovebox and it’s not in the same place, but I know he was showing a 95.

I cleaned up the fob and bought a new battery. I am not against hooking the sending unit up to the top of the dashboard and trying to program it, but I don’t know where to find the FCC ID on the receiver in a 96.

Assuming I am close, but in the instance where the fob, receiver and antenna will not “talk” am I compromising my car somehow? Like it will lock me out, kill the fuel pump or send my horn honking until a Volvo mobile tech crew show up and demand $$$ to reset my system?

I’m attaching pics of the back of the fob and the antenna part that goes in the top of the dash by the windshield. My car was made in September 95 for the 96 model year, so it’s a fairly “early” 96 I suppose one might say. Hoping I can get this working, it would be a nice find and very low cost addition.

That's not an antenna or any part of the fob receiver.
It's just a status LED for the alarm and a solar sensor
for the ECC.
You should already have central locks and maybe even
the dash mounted lock unlock switch. IIRC, you need to
add the 5-pin fob receiver module that mounts above the
passenger-side kick panel. There may be more needed
for the entire security system, but I'm more of a V70 guy.

Just need the module/receiver above the kick panel, and the fob. First thing to do is just try the programming steps with the key on/off, see if the car is already equipped. If not, grab the module.

I took my glove box out yesterday and didn’t see it there, but for this type of two button remote that’s the only place it should be, right?

If that’s the case, and I go back to the junkyard and pull the module from the 1995, there is no guarantee it will be compatible I suppose. Should I be looking for the 210/211 relay that the 96-97s typically use, and if that’s the case would this two button fob from the 95 work?

Were the black modules compatible between 95 and 96 or am I chasing my tail? In other words, if a 95 remote or central module won’t work in anything other than a 95 maybe I shouldn’t have bothered with this one and waited till I found a 96 model with the system I could swap into mine?

Sonic, let me know if any of the 1998 parts are needed. You know the price.

Just confirming what you probably already know, but for the remote fob you have, you need the receiver that's mounted next to the glove box. Nothing else will be compatible.
So to answer your question: Yes, you need to back to the junkyard and fetch that.

See this thread near the end:

After installing that, programming is a breeze.

Good luck, Dirk

But would that module work in a 1996? It’s in a 1995 model. I do have the central locking button on the dash, so assuming the module or transmitter aren’t fried somehow, my concern is is a 95 module going to work in a one model year newer car, or do I need the 210/211 module and related fob for a 96?
