Selling advice on a 1997 960

Post by eboswell686 »

Regards,

I'm looking to sell my 1997 960 station wagon, and I'm just a little confused as to what to honestly ask as a price. It has 250,000 miles on it, I'm the third owner, I've always taken it to Volvo specialists and been on top of every repair, there's zero damage to the body, and a brand-new set of all-season snow-rated tires. The one thing that needs to be addressed by the new owner sooner rather than later - and it's admittedly a big "one thing" - is that the front bushings and wheel bearings need to be replaced, which my mechanic quoted me for about $1200, an amount I'm no longer willing to put into the car. That said, there's hopefully another 50,000 miles left on the engine for someone who is willing to make the necessary replacements.

I was planning on just asking around $1500 (blue book was $2200 last time I checked) for it from a co-worker's daughter for her first car but then I saw a 1994 960 on the street with almost identical specifications, and the sign was asking for 6k. I'm very confused. Am I selling low and are they asking the moon, or are there more mysterious market factors at play here? Any advice would be appreciated, as I've never sold a car before.

Many thanks!

Welcome to MVS. Post some photos please, I'm curious how she looks.

That 1994 either had low miles, or the seller was shooting for a jackpot.

I'd say your $1,500 is a very good asking price in decent shape. That 6K car will never sell at that price. I'm wanting a 960 wagon. As far as I'm concerned they are the best of the last RWD Volvos. I'll keep my sedan until a wagon does come along.

Due to my working on my own car I just did the control arm bushings you mention for $30 in parts and a few hours work. The wheel bearings are even much easier to replace. Since I do my own work I don't know if that estimate is fair or not. Depends on the quality of the parts used I suppose.

Ah, thanks so much for the feedback guys - the '94 also had 250,000 miles on it, but then again, it was also for sale in Seattle and maybe some tech bro is willing to overpay for it just so he can crank a cassette of Nevermind and pretend he was there in the 90s. I'd totally upload some pics of my car but I can't figure out to attach them within the parameters of this particular forum. There's some sun-bleaching on the front and back bumpers and some scratches on the roof from a time I unwisely drove 1,100 miles with my bike just strapped to the rack, but no dents otherwise. There are a few ticky-tack things with in the interior - extendable cup holders long broken off (but that was a dumb design in the first place) and the cigarette lighter no longer works, hence no car charger - but otherwise everything's pretty much close to new.

I think $1500 for a friend is more than fair. If you're listing it for the general public, I'd put $3k and see what fish you catch with that number.

If I lived close I'd be very tempted at $3k. (I'm tempted anyway.)

It’s a $500 deduct for blinking off your license plate, too.

6K for a 94 960 with 250K miles. That isn't it's automotive value. Stop and look again, I think they are marketing it as a tiny home.
