CV Axle

Post by mikkowus » Fri Oct 25, 2019 8:38 am

So I need to replace my CV axles. I get a big shake when I put the car under load. There seems to be only 2 options out there. OEM axles that are 500$ each or really cheap ones under $100 like duralast that have terrible reviews. There are a bunch available on rockauto. But I'm not sure what I should get if any. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. I a have a 2004 volvo xc90 2.5T AWD. It has over 180k miles so no need for anything fancy. But I do take a lot of long trips in the thing

You could try buying a used one - Erie Volvo is an excellent source. Local junk yards are an option. Just make sure what ever you buy is an OEM unit, not a third party repair. Nothing wrong with a used part.

Have you looked at rebooting the one that you have? It is not complicated and if the CV is serviceable it is your cheapest option.

I took the left front one apart once already. The raceways are very worn out. Or seem to be from what I saw. When I go to accelerate after braking it makes a clunking noise. I'm guessing its beyond serviceable?

Ordered a left front axle from ErieVolvo. Waiting for it to be shipped from North Carolina. None of their left front axles are marked awd or fwd. Is the left front axle the same for AWD or FWD?

GKN makes them for Volvo. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 48#fitment

May look on Fcp see if there's differences

For XC90 or XC70 P2 cars.

- LF axle is the same for both FWD and AWD model.
- RF axle is different for FWD vs AWD model.

This is what I remember.
If I am wrong, please correct me.

I have a 2008 xc90 3.2 awd and need a right side axle. The problem I have is that when I look up the axle on Volvo parts sites, it list 2 different axles and does not tell you which is the awd axle. The local dealer wants $850 for the OEM but refuses to give the correct part number.

I've already replaced the left hub/bearing 2 years ago and found that the only one that fits is the SKF hub. Kept the old one. Now need both hub and axle for the right side. When I look up the hub (skf), some list it as "40 spline." I would assume the axle needed would match. Counted the splines in the old one, 40 splines. No idea which Volvo part number is the 40 spline axle.

Searched for axle on amazon. They list one for $151. Read reviews and one customer says it was the wrong axle. The seller responded to him stating if he gave them the last six of his vin, they could get the correct axle. He returned it. No idea if he received the correct one, so I emailed the seller (BuyAutoParts). They are now asking for the vin and Volvo part number.

Anyone have any idea which is correct right front axle for the 2009 xc90 3.2 awd?? Here are the two part numbers:

#36000458 and #36001220. No descriptions given. No spline count given.

Do a google search for 2008 XC90 3.2...

36000458 ---> AWD
36001220 ---> FWD

PS: If your axle has no clicking noise and only a torn rubber boot, just get the rubber boots only. Clean old grease well, install new boots and grease and you are all set.
Take this opportunity to replace the axle seals too. I use Corteco for my 2.5T cars.

A cheaper option is to buy used axle(s) (ebay has them).
As long as the rubber boot is not damaged, you can buy them and replace with new GKN boot and it will be good as new.

Make sure you buy the factory (used) axle and not aftermarket junk.
