Can a 5 bolt p80 REAR hub fit on the 93 850 4 bolt axle

Post by JimBee » Fri Oct 25, 2019 8:57 am

My 93 854 is ready for winter driving except that one of the aluminum wheels isn't holding air for very long. It has been ground and resealed several times and air loss is fairly rapid now.

I just happen to have a spare five bolt 850 wheel that's the same style as my 93 wheels and has a mounted tire that's fully inflated after a year in storage and good enough for winter use. So if I can swap on a 5 bolt rear hub a quick trip to Upull and I'm good to go.

Does anyone know if the swap will work?

The five bolt hub is Volvo Part number 271585. Fitment for 271585 is 1993-1997 850. The 1993 850 GLT has the five bolt hubs.
I cannot say 100% sure the five bolt hub will fit all '93 850s but it looks like a good bet.

I don't know if anyone has done this. It's worth a shot, I don't think there are any suspension differences on the '93 aside from the 4 bolt hubs. Worst case, return it or sell it and find another wheel/tire

Also, all US market 1993 models were GLTs, so they are 4 bolt. Unless of course there were some 5 bolt late models, but every '93 I've seen has been a GLT and 4 bolt.

I'm pretty sure all the 93's are 4 bolt. The platform does seem the same. I also have 2 96 850 wagons and have used brake parts between them and the 93 interchangeably (many harvested from the junk yard), so I'm thinking the axles are probably the same. I'm kind of kicking myself for not snagging a couple of wheels off a 93 that was at the JY a couple of years ago. They were the same style. Haven't seen another one since, though. I picked up the 5 bolt wheel as a backup for one of the 96's if I need it, haven't had a need yet, though the aluminum rims on both of those do lose a little air over the months, some more than others.

Other idea: I think there used to be tubes that you could run in tires to fix the initial problem of your leaking rim.

Got the part numbers switched, 271585 is the four bolt, 271795 is the five bolt.

It looks like the question is: Are the spindles the same for both part numbers.

Volvo sold the spindles and the hubs as a set. You might try changing out the hubs. If that does not work out, go back and get the five bolt spindle. Else you could try swapping between one of your '96s and the '93.

I've put a four bolt front hub on my '96 850 when an eBay seller sent the wrong part. Everything fitted perfectly, I didn't even notice it was the wrong part until I tried to put the wheel back on.

Wait, how do you get the brake over the hub? Or does the rear disc clear the hub?

It seems you're good to go then... grab a hub and give it a go!

The rotor should go back on, the CB is the same. It'll probably even allow the guide pin to be installed, but the holes won't line up. The wheel will go on too for that matter... only problem will be you can't bolt it on!

Helpful points about fitment, giving me food for thought. Abscate's keen observation, shared by bmdubya that the disc will need 5 holes to bolt up the strange wheel. I hadn't thought about that but I do have a few 5 hole rear discs in inventory, even a new one if I decided to splurge and use it, instead of a decent one pulled from a JY donor.

Nod to Clemens, too, for a reminder that there's some sort of sealant you can squirt in through the valve stem to seal from the inside. Worth looking into. And RickHaleParker's discovery that Volvo sells the spindles and hubs as a set is helpful to keep in mind. I've used a hub from a 98 on my 96, was a direct fit, though the 98 hub flange was maybe a 1/4" thicker.

And Richard's pics reminded me of the new 4 bolt front hub I packed in my tool and spare parts kit for a cross country trip a while ago in my 96 855. Fortunately, didn't need it, but it was only when I got back and realized that it was 4 bolt and would have been useless!
