Tell me about the 2000 S70

Post by Dave in Maine » Sun Oct 27, 2019 4:56 pm

I have a line on a possible replacement for my 96 850: a 2000 S70.
While I believe the S70 and 850 are quite similar, I know there are differences. I've had the 850 for 7 years now and know every twitch and noise and what they mean.
I know nothing about the S70. So I have questions for those who do.
What are the things that tend to go wrong on the 2000 S70?
What are the things I need to look at to determine whether to buy the car I'm looking at?
I seem to remember the early S70s had some kind of issue in the drive train - like a transmission problem.
Are there rust problems? IF so, where?
I'm about out of questions - what am I overlooking?

Thanks in advance!

Ypu get a much better engine management system in a 2000 but there are some high cost items that can hit the budget

Electronic throttle body is about a $500 repair if it goes bad, they last about 150k miles

Coil on plug ignition is more reliable than coil cap rotor wires

Engine PCV is improved on turbos

No transmission problems different than850, same transmission if it’s 4 speed

Body and lack of rust are same

1998 S70 was the last good year.
Then 2004 S60, V70 is better.

Search forum for problems with 2000, 2001, 2002, and some 2003 models.

1998 S70 was the last good year.
The engine on the 98 S70 T5 2.3 we use to own sounded better than our current 08 C30 or 03 S80 T6. Has I think a better transmission besides road feel and seating comfort. The S70 seats are firm and fits like a glove.

If non turbo very reliable. Engine PCV on non turbo 2000 cars is liquid cooled.

They run Denso engine management just like Toyotas. I ran a high mileage 2000 V70 for 100,000km and apart from routine stuff expected at this mileage (suspension rebuild and new radiator) the car was never towed for any reason.

The only known vice is the throttle really, although the 2000 model non turbos run the 5 speed auto which can be problematic. Dashboards can break off just like 850s.

Is there any data regarding peeling or dulling of the headlight reflectors?

This is a 2000 S70 non-turbo automatic w/96K and bad clear coat.

The entire family claims not to see whilst driving at night so Momma asked me to look.

Battery good. The light from the H7's seemed white enough in daylight.

The reflectors looked like uniform metallic silver paint. The lenses were relatively clear looking.

Not much to go on.....guess I have to drive it tonight.

The only thing I noticed is that they bought an AGM battery for it.

The TYC replacements are under $100 and work well.

George -- I've probably got some good used units I can throw your way. They do dull out with time. Also, I was reading about batteries recently and there's a reason AGMs aren't a great idea in our cars, but I can't recall precisely what it was.

The alternator has to be dynamically controlled to charge anAGM, since it’s characteristics are quite different than conventional lead acid. Basically the whole charging system has to be designed for it.
