steering noise 04 xc70

Post by famfeld » Mon Oct 28, 2019 3:30 pm

Hi,
I have an issue with my steering. There is a noise/cluck and also a looseness effecting driveability. When I'm parked with the car running and turn the wheels, maybe halfway in either direction (doesn't matter), then turn the steering wheel back and forth 10 degrees I hear a clunk coming from the steering/suspension and it feels a bit loose in the actual steering wheel. Also when I'm cornering in the car it feels sloppy (almost like the steering is not totally gradual, rather I can turn one arc or another, but can't get the car to smoothly travel a line on the exit ramp). I've replaced outer/inner tierods, struts, balljoints. I still need to replace right control arm (but not because it's bad, just because its old and I ordered a new one). I was quoted $1100 from a reputable Volvo place to replace the rack, but I'm not totally convinced. Also I was told by a Volvo salvage yard that racks usually only go bad if they are leaking fluid out the boots, which I really didn't know what to make of. At any rate, I need to get under there and really try to figure it out a little more aggressively. Before doing that I was wondering if anyone had any ideas. Maybe the rack is loose??

Thanks,

Ben

How about setting the front wheels up on ramps with the steering wheel turned to the “problem zone”, then have an assistant wiggle the steering wheel back and forth while you monitor the entire steering system searching for play? Try with both engine running and not running. Don’t forget the steering column itself as a possible problem.

Ben....do you have a jack and stands! I could have a peek next time I’m out in NoHo.

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to lift the front end and with an assistant look into the whole steering/suspension system. Abscate, lets meet up soon. If your in NoHo, let me know if you still have my number. If not I'll text you. Thanks for the advice.
