2004 C70 coolant leak

Post by DrJammer » Mon Oct 28, 2019 8:43 pm

Alright, so I mostly tinker with S/V70s. Friend has a 2004 C70 with multiple issues and it falls in this forum group, so here goes....

Like is said, car has multiple issues and I want to attack in order of importance for him:

1. Coolant warning light comes on. Definite coolant leak. After 2 views of the car, coolant was low so I topped off reservoir tank with distilled water. Let the car run for 10 minutes and the liquid in res tank was boiling and seeping out of cap area. Not sure if is was faulty cap or hairline crack in tank. Thinking new cap and stuck closed therm. Then noticed a lot of liquid dripping and found leak at hose in pic. Seems completely unrelated to coolant system, but not super familiar with C70s. That pic is passenger side bottom near wiper fluid tank? Fluid coming out seemed like coolant though, although I did just add wiper fluid. Fluid was syrupy and greenish and smelled like coolant.

2. Codes come up for either P0496 or P0947 and hoses near purge valve look fine. Almost assuming new purge valve is needed.

3. Some hesitation b/w 2nd and 3rd gears....sometimes. Was planning and drain and fill of ATF, but I am at a loss for yellow dip stick for trans fluid for even checking let alone filling.

#1 is the main focus, and I want this thread to stay true to title, so let's start there.

Thanks,
Jon

Looks like this is unrelated to the coolant problem.

Sounds like exhaust gases in the coolant. Use a Combustion Leak Tester.

Definitely check for combustion gases!

The transmission dipstick hole is both the checker and filler of transmission. It's buried well under the lower radiator hose and is a small yellow stump.

in the pic, you can kind of see the actual stream. I think the edge of the yellow plastic T has worn through the hose on the right side. So maybe I can snip and slide back onto connector. Although it looked, felt, and smelled like coolant, I am 2nd guessing as that hose set up can't hold pressure like the cooling system. Maybe it was thicker than coolant.

looking towards the combustion vacuum test. thanks

I think those hoses run wash fluid not coolant. Still green and will smell like alcohol.

Do you know when thermostat was last replaced? If not in last 4 years then I would replace. Othets can recommend aftermarket brands other than OE. I only use OE.

Check gases in coolant like the guys have mentioned before doing other work. Does his temperature guage read normally and sit near horizontal on guage?

Could be as simple as bad seal on coolant cap or crack in tank as you mentioned.

Neil.

Temp gauge sits at 3 o'clock. I can pretty much guarantee the therm hasn't been replaced in a long time. I feel like I was the 1st to open the hood in awhile.

I appreciate the guidance. can't wait to try and find the ATF 'stump'

P.S. darn scotty videos pretty much popping up in every search now......

Did you notice the spark when he re-connects the negative battery terminal. A sign he had ignition on PosII which is correct procedure for P2 battery connection. He is a pro!!

These Stant thermostats are 194 degF and are Wahler OEM.
