If you have been waiting to buy a new Volvo check the 2020 XC60

Post by June »

I have been driving the 2020 XC60 as a service loaner since last Thursday. I am completely impressed!!! In the T5 FWD version this car is really smooth and fast. I had a 2019 last month and this 2020 is vastly different running! The occupation space width wise at shoulder height is better. The only downside is the AC system uses the new refrigerant. Look at these strange lines! How does it work? It warms a bit at idle. I have almost used half a tank since Thursday so clearly the mpg is better than last year's model. All said this is the best Volvo I have driven in years! June

R1234yf

.
Its global warming potential (GWP) is ultra-low, with a rating of less than 1....For comparison, R134a has a GWP of 1430.
...
...
Compared with R134a, considerable upgrades to component quality and robustness, as well as compliance with a number of new SAE standards, have been engineered into R1234yf systems. The systems are designed to prevent potential refrigerant leakage into the cabin.
...
...
The biggest difference is R1234yf’s A2L flammability rating, which means it is mildly flammable.

It's worth noting that every 2020 XC60 requires premium gas, which is something to keep in mind when considering fuel costs.

R1234yf systems a THX coaxial line to add to the condensing of the refrigerant. The high side line making that 90 degree bend to go into the low side line is the start of that coaxial high side line inside low side line section. At the expansion valve the line connects still in that configuration so it looks like there is only a low side connection. All the SPA vehicles have that line style at front evaporator even with 134a refrigerant. Some P3 models had the coaxial lines for parts of MY12 and MY13 and then they returned to the separated lines for many markets.

THX - "THX Certification establishes a rigorous set of industry standards for audio reproduction. The certification means that the sound coming out of your 5.1 surround sound system or any other speaker is exactly as the audio engineer intended while he was recording and mixing it"

So, in this diagram below, I perceive now an expansion valve as shown in item one, and item two as higher pressure lines, with larger diameter line having a lower pressure than smaller line. If this is an Internal Heat Exchanger, then smaller line is high pressure, and it is threaded back into larger line to be cooled. And larger line is in a vapor state (much cooler), which cools smaller higher pressure line.

In other words, the smaller line is inserted into larger line, so its liquid (high pressure) can be cooled down by larger line having a lower pressure.

One Year of R-1234yf, Who is On-Board?

The Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) has been tracking refrigerant use by vehicle manufacturers for quite some time and, as expected for the 2018 model year, we have seen a few more manufacturers choose to change over a few or even all of their US offerings to use the new refrigerant HFO-1234yf.
...
...
...
Still, there are a shrinking number who continue to use R-134a exclusively, including Acura, Infinity, Mazda, Nissan and Volvo. We didn’t expect to see yf in any of the new Nissans or Infinities, but were surprised that Acura didn’t even have one, considering that seven of the nine Hondas have already been changed over. Mazda showed six models with 134a (Mazda 3, 6, CX-3, CX-5, CX-9 and MX-5 Miata), while none of the six Volvos (S60, S90, T8, V90 and XC60) use yf.

I suspect those dual pipes represent an Internal Heat Exchanger

"The Internal Heat Exchanger – IHX – has been around for a long time in stationary air conditioning systems, but most automotive service technicians are hearing about it for the first time. It will be needed in vehicles that use R-1234yf refrigerant, but it’s already being used in the current model Toyota Sienna minivan filled with R-134a refrigerant.

An IHX is a liquid-to-vapor heat exchanger, with one inner chamber and one outer chamber. Hot liquid refrigerant from the condenser flows through the inside chamber, and it’s surrounded by cool refrigerant vapor flowing from the evaporator through the outer chamber. After the condenser removes enough heat to condense the refrigerant to a liquid, it’s still pretty warm. The IHX transfers even more heat out of the liquid refrigerant, “sub cooling” it below condensation temperature. Obviously this improves A/C system efficiency, but it’s important to understand some of the different ways engineers will ‘spend’ that improvement.

By getting a head start on cooling the refrigerant before it reaches the expansion device (orifice tube or thermal expansion valve), the IHX is utilizing cooling capacity that is otherwise wasted. A design engineer could use this “free” cooling capacity to reduce the size of the compressor, which could cascade into weight reduction and less load on the engine. Sure, these would be small improvements, but these days engineers are adding up all the little improvements they can get."
