Slip the ball into the socket and secure it with a rubber band , tape , zip tie,,,or excess Oxford commas.

My guess is the plastic cup inside cracked or expired.

Been a long time since I worked on a 98 or older P80. Is there not a little locking pin that holds the lever onto the ball end?

Hi,

Oh so it is plastic inside? Figures.

Yeah whatever holds the cup onto the ball must have deteriorated.

I expect you've resolved this by now but the same happened to me today. Yes it's the plastic inner clip that just crumbles away. I'm not keen on rubber bands to hold it in place as i'll forget, they'll perish and come off again.

The part that i've opted to replace this with is one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Ca ... 3700299524

After all, the Volvo part is just two ball ends and a link rod, all I need to do here is match the length by cutting. I was going to make my own by purchasing the ball ends and a bit of threaded rod, then for the same amount of money found the "universal part".

The ball is a standard 8mm ball, what could possibly go wrong?! :)

Looks like plastic version of old carburetor throttle linkage. 8mm would be close to 5/16 ball. Might try general hardware store assortment bins. Sorry - you are in UK. nevermind............

Yes indeed, I could have just bought one end but then i'd have needed a longer rod. The end that has broken is the one with the larger piece rather than the shorter more standard size.
Plus, no point going out searching for one when the magic of Ebay can have one delivered free within a day or two. :)

Ive got a loose throttle body rod on the 1998 project - Im going to reach out to my junkyard friends for a replacement.

Currently, holding it in with a hair scrounge.

I believe one could slip stiff card in the clip area and renew the pressure of the cup on the balls to secure this, I will try this and report here later\

Part number shows up as backordered on many sites, but NLA from TASCA, so I doubt it is still made.

Be careful taking those off!

I recently found mine to be popped off, and noticed that it had been popped off when opening the throttle. For whatever reason the coil the cable wraps around had drifted towards the US driver side. This meant, due to the angle the bracket sits at, that as the throttle opened and the rod was moved up it was fouling on the bracket - ultimately pushing it off.

I was able to simply push the coil back towards US passenger side. It moved approx 1cm and the rod has been secure since. Due to other reasons my car has a no start condition so I have not been able to drive it for any distance yet, so cannot state whether or not this helps. It does, however, seem likely to be a potential cause of the rod cup failure - excessive pressure being exerted on plastic parts.

Maybe I’m just putting this on upside down?

I’ll check if the “ head with lock nut” is up it down

Volvo web store shows head up.
