Correct torque for head bolts?
I have definitely researched this topic. Most of what read is 15 ft lbs first pass 44 ft lbs second pass then 130 degrees, on my 2005 xc70. Problem is that the machine shop I took my head to printed me out all my engine specs from AERA engine builders association. On the print out it says 15 ft lbs, 30 ft lbs, then 130 degrees. (30 not 44) so just looking to get some clarification from someone who’s done this before. Thank yal!

Go up to 30, then the 130 degrees, if it feels right, keep it, or if not, give it another 45 degrees turn. You'll be fine. (no I have not done it before)

Per Volvo Vida:
Tighten the screws in sequence from the center and outwards.
Stage 1........20 Nm (15 Ft-lbs)
Stage 2........60 Nm (44 Ft-lbs)
Stage 3........130°

Re: Correct torque for head bolts?
I always use 44ft-lbs for the last torque before putting the dial on it.

Re: Correct torque for head bolts?
Thanks guys, thanks Rick for the Vida reference.
Hey does anyone know what the cross-hatching is supposed to look like on the cylinder walls? Mine are at about a 60 degree angle and almost look like scratches. I have some pictures just got to figure out how to upload them.

Re: Correct torque for head bolts?
Typical error on torque wrenches is 25%, so don’t get too hung up trying to get these settings “ exact”
Try to be consistent, rather than exact. On the head, torque even-ness is more important than actual value, within reason. New bolts too, please.

Re: Correct torque for head bolts?
Consistently is key, got it!
Ok here are my cylinder walls, only 100k miles on the car so I’m really hoping these aren’t scratches..
