Change odometer reading from KPH to MPH

Post by Endangered » Sun Nov 03, 2019 4:16 am

This, you guys have been super helpful in the past, here goes.

I have a 1998 V70 with 162,000 kilometers or approximately 99,000 original miles.

Have lived in the Philippines for a few years decided to go back to the U.S. I am on the downhill side of 73, on a fixed income and don't need a fancy new ride. Want to ship the V70, one of the issues is changing the speedometer from KPH to MPH. Been reading that if the replacement instrument cluster is beyond the 1998 you have all kinds of electrical issues and problems and it will not work. Very few sources for parts here in the Philippines, primarily dealers and they are outrageous in pricing.

Distributor cap, a while back was over 5,000 pesos or $100!!! When I asked the young man in the dealership parts department about the rotor, "what's a rotor, never heard of it."

Going to use the current instrument cluster and change the dials from the gray to white. Should save time and lots of trouble I hope.

Where I am stuck is the odometer, how do I change it form kilometers to miles?
Some say by change the thermometer from C to F and the odometer will change. Tried doing it several different ways.............and it changes from C to F and no more. New Volvo's easy to do but older ones cannot find anything that works.

ANYBODY know how to accomplish this???

Regards, Endangered

Lookup Neil’s saga of importing his 850/ V70 from Canada to CA , I think you need a new instrument cluster to get to miles readout. You have to document that the car has all the correct stuff for both safety and emissions to get it over the border, too.

I’ve got a 1998 cluster you can have , but I’m halfway around the world, unfortunately

I'm unfamiliar with Neil's saga. And its link was not provided. I'd first suggest researching that in case it has the answer.

Otherwise, you might try contacting MVS member xanthefin, since he has experience with reprogramming a near virgin '97 (or '98) V70 instrument cluster -- at least for the Market Code, Tire Size, etc -- and he might know how to switch the cluster from kph to mph and vice versa. He might even add that capability to xiaotec "850 OBD-II" Android app (if that reprogramming is possible, and if he hasn't already added that to the app).

And, of course, you might just take the car to the dealer (once back in USA) and have them do the kph to mph reprogramming, and thereby avoid having to swap the cluster. But I'm not sure if it is possible for the dealer to do that kph->mph or mph->kph conversion for a cluster which has already had it programmed the first time.

In summation: check Neil's saga, check with xanthefin, check with a USA dealer.

Is it really necessary to change the odometer from km to miles? I thought they only demanded a speedometer in miles and for that you only need to change the "text" in the speedometer housing. I'm driving around Scandinavia with a odometer/speedometer in miles (which also shows km/h)and that's not an issue over here.

This is the post I did a few years ago on importing a 1997 Volvo 850 to California from Canada.

The process is tricky as you have to deal with US customs and those I dealt with had little knowledge of the current import rules. You then have the added issues of state rules that can vary. In California they said that you had to have the speedo changed to MPH as the dominant speed reading. The US version has MPH and KPH, our KPH version only has KPH.

If your speedo has KPH and MPH you may have a get out to changing the speedo.

Changing the speedo is easy. The customs idiot I dealt with said that we had to have the speedo changed BEFORE entering the US, which naturally was a 180 from what the California State required. The customs also said we had to have it done 'professionally' with a receipt. I changed is and my buddy who has a shop wrote me a receipt.

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=76403&hilit=volvo+8 ... California

Hope this helps.

Neil.

Neil, was there another thread on the actual import process or was that the only one?

Good question. I haven't got time just now but will look later to see if I had one. My brother also dealt with the import process so I might not have written more than was in here but I'll check.

Neil.

Here is a gem that happened on the Canada to CA import - just to give you a taste of how things can go wrong

Clash between Importing (CBP/Homeland Security) and DMV of state requirements.
No what makes these cars expensive is the A??hole government people in the US. My brother and I drove 200 miles to the border to deliver the 850 project to California to be turned around or have the car impounded as the Border Patrol Hitler decided we didn't have the car to spec. That is in spite having all the correct paperwork (he agreed). We knew the speedo had to be changed to MPH which fixed also the only other issue of the warning light symbols, but we were told that on NO ACCOUNT by the DMV should we change the speedo from kph until they saw the car, and it has to be registered with that and then changed. Their paperwork even has a spot for filling in kph!! E-mail from the US Border Control also confirmed we had everything in order. Told to come on the weekend as quieter, but naturally nothing else is open and they have cell phone blockers at the border station.
