This helps to reduce emissions for the older cars when engine is cold. It forces more air into the cat when it is cold.
Basic flaw with the system is Volvo put the control valve by the exhaust manifold. Over time the diaphram in the valve fails and sticks open and allows condensation to drain down the tube to the pump itself filling it with water. Eventually the pump rusts and fails. The poor design is aggravated by there being no drain hole on the pump for the moisture to wick out. I drilled a small 1/8" hole in the bottom of the casing when I replaced it.
Depending on which state you are in you can do a fairly simple delete of the pump using a resistor (or is it diode?) in the wiring to fool the car into thinking it is there. There are several threads on the subject. If you have to keep it there are/where people re-building them and selling on Ebay at one time for around $120 or so. That was a few years ago.
Either way, you can remove the valve and check it out, or leave it in place and when the engine is warm, remove the pipe to the pump from the pump and try and suck on it. If you can then the valve has failed.
Neil.

CIK7 it's amazing that you still have a working pump!
Scott, how long have you been running the pump with the drain hole? Is this really the simple effective solution? I live in a cold climate, my air pump is dead, and the car stinks pretty bad when it's cold, so I'd like to get the system working again.

So does the whining mean it's doing its job? My car stinks really bad of gas actually.850oldschool wrote: ↑08 Nov 2019, 12:39 CIK7 it's amazing that you still have a working pump!

Whining for a few seconds after start up is what it should do. It winds up then winds down and stops. Now if the little guy is squealing or screeching or throws a code then you are having issues.

Do you use a remote starter, and finish your coffee while the cat warms up? Mine smells really terrible after a cold start. Like, girlfriend yelling "I hate this stinky car!" bad. It sounds like CIK7 has a similar problem.

I have deleted it on 3 cars now via the diode method, and never had a smelly cat converter. Something is wrong with your exhaust, it is irrelevant to the air pump. Nor does the air pump have anything to do with the car running rich (smelling like fuel) or lean, those are from other issues.
Remember, about half of the 96-98 cars have air pumps, half don't. To turn off the air pump in the tune (then no diode is required) you just disable the air pump routine, without touching any other part of the engine management like air:fuel mix etc.

Drilling a small hole will help prevent a pump from dying, but will do nothing for a dead one.850oldschool wrote: ↑08 Nov 2019, 12:39 CIK7 it's amazing that you still have a working pump!

If you insist on fixing the pump then step one is replacing the SAS valve, step two is installing a working pump. You don't need to drill a hole if you get a new SAS valve but you can.
