1995 960 Sedan
When unlocked, the inside driver door handle is loose, and flops between flush and about 30 degrees. It still works, and when you pull it, but it's odd, and I'm thinking it just isn't in there correctly. However, when the door is locked, the handle is firmly snug against the casing. That makes me think it's fine.
Can someone who has played with the door handles see any reason it might be doing that?

Very common on these cars. The door lock mechanism looses all the lube and sticks. When the door is locked, the rod connected to the door handle is free, attached only to a spring. When the door is unlocked, the rod is connected to all moving parts that releases the door. They get dry and rusty and stick keeping the spring loaded and rod flapping around and not putting any tension on the handle. You can try to get as much oil as you can from outside but it's best to pull inner door panel out and grease everything. Had this on both doors before.
