Screeching sound while turning

2002 S60, about 170,000 miles.

My car started making a screeching sound when making a tight turn, such as turning into a parking spot. It sounds like it is coming from the left front.

It screeches with or without brakes.

Normally, I don't hear it when the car has been sitting for a while and is cooled down. So leaving for work, no screech. Get to work, screech.

My mechanic has looked a couple times but can't find anything. The bearing seem find. The brakes are fine.

Any thoughts?

There is a similar noise from a generic power steering pump. It is from the fluid cavitating. Do you know that you are not making this?

The noise only happens when the car is moving. I would think that steering pump noise would happen with car moving or sitting still.

Also, sometimes the noise happens when the steering isn't at or near full lock.

I would check your power steering - look for leaks and fluid level and condition.

Then I would look at the bearing that is on the steering column. You need to remove the plastic piece and pull back the carpet. This is a common source of noise, but I wouldn't call it a screech. Worth a look.

I would think that would make noise while turning the wheel. This noise happens when the car is turning but the wheel is steady.

As I cannot see, hear or touch your car - I suggested a common source of steering noise on almost all Volvos. The easy way to eliminate it as the source is to take 5 minutes and look.

Where is your spouse when this noise happens? Could it be coming from their mouth? How's your driving? Have you had a refresher course lately?

That reminds me! When my boys were young they always had this invisible steering wheel in their hands. When I made tight turns they screeched while turning and leaning. I show them on Youtube the consequences of bad and fast driving. Now that they both drive I've taught them what a car can potentially do making a tight turn for safety reasons and skill improvements. Screeching the tires would take away the car privileges. Once or twice at this one particular turn however, I only screeched them slightly and carefully to show them where they don't want to go even though the capability is there.
