RedC70 spazzing again!

Post by redc70 » Tue Nov 12, 2019 4:47 pm

Hello there, new issue with redc70. After replacing the entire front suspension and brand new tires, she no longer bounces down the road. I forgot how nice and smooth my Volvo is. New problem:
Last week on the way to the airport, a fairly severe wobble started. Not a vibration, a wobble, then promptly went away after I touched the brakes. I thought it the bad road. About a mile up the highway, it did it again. After that, no problems for the next 150 miles. Driving to and from work and highway speeds, no problems whatsoever. Going to the airport again today, it did it several times again. I stopped, checked heat in the front rotors, seemed to be equal. I started about 5mph and braked, it pulled to the left. Then straightened out, No correlation between, speed, acceleration, load, turning or braking, completely random!
When it does this I touch the brake and slow down a little and it goes away. After doing the wobble a few times (4), no worries after that. Drove to the airport and back no problems.
No clicking or howling, like a CV or bearing, works as normal turning hard right and left forwards and backwards.
Any ideas from the Volvo boffins? I'm leaning towards a sticking caliper, but I really don't know.
Many thanks!

Did you change the brake pads when you had it all apart?
If so, look at the old brake pads. Is there a retaining clip that did not get transferred to the new brake pads?

No, I haven't touched the brakes, only did the front struts etc, but did have a good look at the pads and rotors at the same time. Did not think to look at retaining clips. The front end work was done in August or September. That is something I will check later this week if I get a chance. Just came back from town, and still drives fine. Don't know about this thing.
Thanks for responding.

Might be a bad brake flex hose at that wheel (left front). They can swell inside and act like a check valve. Could also be really junky brake fluid that has never been changed and the caliper cylinders are sticking. Try bleeding that caliper. See if brake fluid pushed out is clear or very dark. If so, do a full brake fluid change on the entire system. This can be done with a hand vacuum pump.

Wheel bolts all tight? Something else loose in the suspension?
