Spastic transmission?

Post by theHman » Thu Nov 14, 2019 10:53 am

I have a 1998 V70 XC. Every once in a while, my transmission goes crazy. The "up-shift" light on the dash starts flashing, the buttons on the shift console start blinking (the "S" "E" and "W" for sport, economy and winter) on and off and the transmission seems to be stuck in high gear. I run it through the gears, starting off in 1st and manually shifting it up for a while (sometimes it's a day, sometimes its just a few minutes) and it resorts back to normal shifting. After a few starts and stops, the up shift light on the dash stops flashing and all is back to normal. The transmission is full and clean, so it's not low fluid. I should also mention, the "W" button doesn't stay pushed if you try to use it. Should I be worried that the tranny is going out? I just drove the car from Oregon to Baja Mexico and back without a hitch.

How many miles are on the beast, and how long since the ATF was either changed or drain-and-filled?
