Cylinder 5 misfire on start

Post by whipperwill » Fri Nov 15, 2019 4:13 pm

So I have a 2001 V70 XC that occasionally misfires on cylinder 5 upon startup. I replaced the coilpack and the plugs were changed 10,000 miles ago. I checked the plug and it is not fouled. The CEL will turn on and off as it will run for a while without misfiring. I replaced the battery recently as I could only get 2-3 cranks out of it before the dash would note low battery voltage. With the intermittency of this issue, I am curious if it could be a fuel injector? I saw on another thread that cylinder 5 misfire can be an intake gasket leak as well, but it only misfires for 5-10 seconds on startup on occasion. The coilpack was definitely bad as the gas mileage improved and it ran much better after replacement. Also there was a wire with the insulation that was abraded through that I patched as well. Any where else I should look?

Move injector, plug to another cylinder? Did you do a compression test? Might be an exhaust valve not sealing properly?

How about the alternator ? Do you get a decent 14.5V after the engine starts ? The wires to the coils do indeed get sometimes damaged and even crushed by the small plastic engine cover. The injectors don't usually go bad on these, but who knows, maybe look at their wiring

My 1999 did this with a bad vacuum leak in the purge circuit. If it’s for 5-10 second sit might be a sticking ring or valve, some sea foam or Marvel oil treatment might unstick it.
