I had the thermostat fail on my 850T. It gave the usual symptoms - failure to warm up much. It would warm up, just in 45 minutes, and would be giving me heat by the time I got to work.
I finally got the replacement part, and found that rather than the wax failing (as expected), the bracket holding the element had actually broken. I haven't seen one fail this way before, so I thought I'd share.

That was a Volvo thermostat. (Says Volvo on the bottom, and Wahler on the top.)
To not be too hard on Volvo, it may be that it's never been changed. I checked my records, and while I replaced hoses and coolant along the way, I didn't explicitly write down that I changed the thermostat. On the one hand, I can't imagine that I didn't, but on the other hand, I'm usually pretty good at writing these things down in the log. So, it's possible it has >300k miles on it.

They all will eventually break, you're not being too hard on it. Good news it broke open, like they are supposed to.
