98 V70 xc: later model FOB programming

Post by CIK7 »

Now that I have been able to fulfill my obsession with my dream Volvo wagon, I now need to get a FOB and additional key. I have seen the fob for the 98 and it just looks like an older version of the 2001 I used to have. It would be cool to buy a fob that would typically go to a newer Volvo. Who on here can help me with choosing the right fob and figuring out the exact steps to programming it to my car, if it can be?

I have circled the P2 and latest generation fobs. Update: I did some research and found a couple things. 1. The plain black latest gen FOBs are $30-60 on eBay. 2. A forum stated that the later (P3 & up) FOBs come from factory with a code and that eBay sellers tend to not have this code (therefore a scam), but might if asked.

1998 V70 XC black ($1K trade, Mi:143,995/151K, The Cloud, totalled 5/2/20 @149K, engine toast @ 151,1XX)
1998 V70 XC white ($50 cash, junk, donor for my black XC)
2001 V70 Ba white (sold)

Plans for The Cloud: junkyard engine, new lighting arrangement, will be offroader.
My daily is faster than an Impala (9.1 sec) but still a snoozer (8.2 sec).

Programming the fob for a 98+ is dealer only, or someone (e.g. a shop) with the dealer software. I've never done it so unsure of the cost but not real cheap.

I had one done just over a year ago on my '99. Was something like an hour in labor. I had a new key, remote, cutting, software and total was ~$450.

In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

A 99 is different, the car in question is a 98. A 99 will be even more expensive because the key is chipped.

98 the key is not chipped, you can cut a new key without the dealer and it will work fine, but programming the fob requires taking the car in and is expensive.
