Engine musings
Can I drop a 2006 V70 R engine into a 2007 XC70 without major revisions to the XC?

Re: Engine musings
Are you including the transmission in this exercise?
Does not each node need to be "vehicle-matched" for anything to work?

Re: Engine musings
Definitely budget in software clone as your R engine will have its own software, and of course ECUs are VIN specific.

Re: Engine musings
However to keep this thread alive. I was recently thinking about this and was wondering.
Say I did buy a full parts car, say a cheap s60R. And I wanted to swap in all the goods (including a m66, cause that's the point of the whole thing) into my 2004 xc70.
If I swapped the dash, ecu, door module?, and all other VIN specific things.
Would that work?
I guess that would really just be a chassis swap?
And I guess that the only thing that I would really need are a set of pegs for the calipers and some custom axles for the longer arms? Right?
I've thought about this too many times to at least not write it down (clearly) and share.
I guess I'm saying trick the s60r into the xc70 shell. What am I forgetting? Because I am clearly forgetting something.

Re: Engine musings
If you want the XC70 to get up and go like the V70R. You will need to swap transmissions also. The 2006 has V70R has a 6 speed automatic TF-80SC AWD, that is part of the get up and go story. The 2007 XC70 has a 5 speed AW50/51 AWD.
You may or may not need to swap the Rear Differential if you swap the Transmissions, depends on if they are the same gear ratio or not.
You will need to swap the ECM or clone to the other hardware.
TCM if you swap the transmissions.
There might be other software issues that will need to be addressed.

Re: Engine musings
I am referring here back to the first post i.e. Evan: The basic engine swap should be no problem, though there are doubtless some small details to pay attention to. That gets the XC70 on the road. But if you want the XC70 to go like an R, you need to move in the tune that makes it go (ECM), which the R engine can tolerate but the XC70 engine can not. The tune, of course, is entirely software.
Swapping in an "R transmission" is optional and would add some more go to the setup, not required.

Re: Engine musings
Here's why I'm asking to clear away the mystery -- I have a line on a parts XC70 with seized engine. I recently replaced the engine in my '06 V70R for head gasket leak. My mechanic still has my old engine. If I did the labor on an out-of-car head gasket swap, then I'm only out parts cost (and machining) for the head gasket replacement. At that point, I have a usable R engine. Not concerned about making the XC go like stink, but rather about getting it back on the road cheaply (assmuing a zero cost to my labor to pull the seized XC lump and insert R lump). That's the perspective from which I'm approaching this. That may help give more precision to the responses. Discuss. . . .

Re: Engine musings
The XCs ECU will go bananas since nothing the engine is doing will match what it expects.
You'll have to clone or move pretty much every computer node since they're all matched to one single car.

Re: Engine musings
Presumably the R engine is a B5254T4.
Got an engine number for the XC? Is it the expected B5254T2?
I don't think there will be too many bananas.
