The turbos are different, aren't they? Are the flanges the same size so you can just bolt in the XC turbo into he R engine?

The only other difference will be fuel injectors which will either work or be an easy fix.

Some of the B5254T4 where mated to a AW50/51 AWD but the AME 2006 V70 R are all TF-80 SC. On the cars with B5254T4 & AW50/51 AWD torque is limited to 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft). The B5254T4 & TF-80 SC torque was unlimited.

If he transfers the engine but not the transmission. He may want to get a ECM from a 2004 or 2005 V70 R with a AW50/51 AWD and clone from it. Else he could take the chance of shelling out the AW50/51 AWD.

Another option, the B5254T2 & the B5254T4 have the same bore, stroke & displacement but the compression ratio for the B5254T2 is 9.0:1 and compression ratio for the B5254T4 is 8.5:1. The mechanical difference is in upper end.

If he transfers the upper end from the B5254T2 to the B5254T4, the B5254T4 will be identical to the B5254T2. Then he can drop in the converted B5254T4 and no need to worry about software.

Sell the upper end from the B5254T4 and a image of the software to somebody else.

My gut tells me that it may be physically relatively doable, but you're going to be chasing codes and quirky behavior trying to match the software with what each module is expecting from each other module based on their individual perspectives.

The other thing that would make me personally back off of this idea is what else in the XC70 will need work to get it up to the point you are effectively applying the R engine's power. If you have lots of time and money to give it a try, I am honestly tickled by the idea, I just have fears.

I think some of you underestimate how small changes the ECU programming tolerates before it throws an error from unexpected behaviour.

You'd be much better of getting a new 2.5T engine to put in and then perhaps do a software stage 1 tune to 250hp/400Nm on top of it. From a practical or perspective. The other route is something you'd do simply for the hell of it even though I really like the idea of a XC-R.

The stage 1 tune might not make it an R but it really does pack quite a punch compared to the original tune especially with the added torque.

I think the compression ratios on the engines are different, as the R has a beefier (16T?) turbo

The Xc70 ECU won’t be happy with that, I don’t think

I’m up for it though. No soccer in winter.
