Kia ora
I have a 1994 Volvo 440 GLT.
I recently got the instrument panel fixed as the fuel and temp gauge didn't work. In the process I took off the steering wheel and airbag. In the process, I broke the clock spring so I got an SRS error 2-1-2. After a new clock spring replacement, I was able to erase the fault code on the OBD1 - hooray.
However, the SRS light won't go off. I even took it to Volvo and their diagnostics said there were no faults with the car - but the light won't turn off. Does anyone have any ideas? This problem is killing me - just spent a couple thousand getting other work done to it (new seals, control arms), but the SRS light won't turn off.
Is it an issue with the instrument panel repair? Airbag module? (god forbid)
Thanks for your help. I'm new here.

Re: Volvo 440 SRS Light On - No Fault
The SRS light is different than other warning lights. It is default on unless the SRS module turns the light off. If the connection on cluster for the wire to SRS module is off or otherwise not a good connection then the light is on. It is this way in the event the SRS fuse was to blow, SRS module was faulty, or SRS module was unplugged. Since you had the cluster repaired there is that possibility something about that repair is making the light stay on. The 440 was never a North American marketed vehicle so I am not sure about all details but all the ones sold here would have an SRS code for the light circuit fault if it was not connected. I would think the dealer diagnosis would have found that code when they scanned it. When you did code erase through the diag plug do you remember if the SRS light flashed or went out for even a second or two while you were doing that?

Hi Rick
Thanks for the reply. I cleared the code using the on board diagnistic tool under the hood. When reading the faults in Socket 7 it came back 2-1-2. After clock spring repair I successfully cleared it.

Re: Volvo 440 SRS Light On - No Fault
Hi Jimmy. Thanks for the reply.
No, I wasn't looking at the dash when clearing the code. I imagined it just stayed on. Do you think this points more to an SRS module fault (and/or wiring) or instrument cluser? I did not have this SRS problem before the cluster repair, but in saying that, my car was off the road for four months for other repairs, too.
I did go back to the fellas who did the cluster repair and explained my situation. However, they weren't too polite, speaking in a lot of jargon and kept stating its the airbag module that turns the light off. Is it possible that the cluster could be the issue? If it is the airbag computer then my car is write off, so trying to ascertain cheapest route to maybe-fixing it before spending money on a lost cause.
Hmm. This makes sense. Could still be either. Volvo read no faults from the airbag module, but said that would be the worst case and they can't rule it out - unless one of its faults is its inability to give out faults (Ahh!)The SRS light is different than other warning lights. It is default on unless the SRS module turns the light off. If the connection on cluster for the wire to SRS module is off or otherwise not a good connection then the light is on. It is this way in the event the SRS fuse was to blow, SRS module was faulty, or SRS module was unplugged.
Thanks for your insight. Glad there are other 400-series owners out there. Hoping to get this one back on the road!

Re: Volvo 440 SRS Light On - No Fault
I'll be taking it to an auto electrician tomorrow for some more diagnostics. The fella is reluctant to investigate the wiring as it will cost a lot of labour. In the event it is the Airbag ECU/Computer, does anyone know if this can be installed or how to do it? Volvo informed me it needs to be programmed to the car but some other forums for other models said otherwise. Not sure about 400 series. Cheers.
