2001 Volvo V70 T-5 wagon transmission
First of all hi! I am a newbie here and I am also a new owner of a 01 v70 t-5 wagon with the 2.3 turbo. I got the car cheap from a friend knowing that it needs a transmission. I'm sure it's been covered on here but I can't seem to find what I am looking for. I'm looking to know what transmissions will fit in my car. Different models or years. I do have the geartronic transmission in it now. Can I switch to a non geartronic one? if so what if anything do I have to change?
Issue with this car is that it drives great for about 30 miles then goes into limp mode (3rd gear) and starts slipping. I'm sure that the trans is toast as I've drained the old fluid out (black) and put new fluid in and got it to drive the 30 miles. I don't hear any weird sounds when its doing all of this but am getting a trans message in the message center. If I let the car sit overnight I can drive it about 10 miles with no problems so I'm thinking filter is clogged but with the condition of the old fluid I should probably replace it.
Any and all help is much appreciated!! Thanks in advance!

Erie VoVo in upstate NY is a good place to source big stuff, but any PnP ( west) or junkyard ( rest of world) should work

Re: 2001 Volvo V70 T-5 wagon transmission
I just need to know if there is a difference in getting a regular auto trans to getting a geartronic one? I have geartronic in it but I will never use it but I'm not sure if there is a difference in the transmissions themselves.

Maybe try the Volvo parts webstore and see what transmission options come up?
I thought they were the same and the geartronic operation is enabled in the control units?

Re: 2001 Volvo V70 T-5 wagon transmission
Cooldude: Sounds like your filter is clogged. At this point you don't have much to lose if you want to try some unorthodox repair attempts. You have two of these options.
Before moving forward and for good measure check your B4 servo and make sure it is not damaged. Doubt it is your problem, as what you describe sounds like a clogged filter. The tranny is most likely at end of life, but you don't have much to lose by either of these options.
1) Drill holes in the filter; or
2) Try to backflush the filter.
There are a few discussions on this forum about the process. If you drill out the filter, one should add an inline filter to replace it.

Re: 2001 Volvo V70 T-5 wagon transmission
Ok. So I drilled a hole and poked a few holes in the filter and ran great for about 5 miles and then lost all gears lol. So I know it needs a transmission but my question is do I have to get a geartronic trans or can I just put a regular non geartronic in it?

Re: 2001 Volvo V70 T-5 wagon transmission
Cooldude: I am not sure, but I found this, but take it for what it is. https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post ... tm?t=62044
I would pull the part number off the current transmission and see what it says when you cross-reference.
From what little I know, the transmissions are all basically the same (AW 55-50/51), and the valve body also (of course year changes have updates. Valve body has no letter, an A, B, C and maybe ...). The geartronic portion appears to be in the shifter mechanism and the computer software - neither of which you are changing.
The safest approach is to replace like with like. You could of course rebuild it if you are so inclined. If you want to do this, send me a pm. I have 99% of the kit and a valve body from a 2001 XC70 AWD that is your for the price of shipping.

Re: 2001 Volvo V70 T-5 wagon transmission
I am a mechanic but I haven’t the slightest clue on rebuilding a transmission. I was looking around on here to see about changing the filter in the new used trans I’m looking at getting. It’s got 169k miles on it. The trans that’s in the car now made it to 316k! Car runs to good to junk it. I hate people saying all you have to do is pull bell housing off and it’s right there but idk how true it is.
