Is Beck Arnley blue coolant any good for 850?

Post by SonicAdventure »

When they redid my timing belt and water pump a few months ago, they drained the blue fluid and replaced with regular green. I didn’t notice it till the other day.

My car is a 96 850 non turbo. Should it have the blue fluid? Also if so, is Beck Arnley’s Euro Blue coolant an acceptable product for these cars?

I’ve moved and found a new mechanic and I’m considering having the green flushed out and put back to blue since that is what the PO apparently always ran. They want like $28 a jug for the BA product at the local repair shop, which I am not adverse to paying if it’s the correct fluid and an acceptable substitute for Volvo OEM.

No Volvo dealers close to me, so if BA works I will go with that.

Go to the shop and find out exactly what they put in, brand and model. If you cannot get that information, it is better to error on the side of caution. Replace it.

Do not get hung up on the color of antifreeze. There is no color standards for antifreeze. They can use whatever color they want for any type.

No do not use the Beck Arnley blue. Beck Arnley's own coolant guide does not list any Volvos and for a good reason, Beck Arnley's is Phosphated. Volvo call for a Phosphate free, HOAT that meets european specification G05.

Go to O'reilly and get Valvoline Zerex G05, it is HOAT, Phosphate free and meets G05 specs.
