2006 XC90 starting issue

Post by mchestnut70 »

I recently acquired this really nice 2006 XC90. My problem is when it's been sitting awhile or "cold" like in the morning or after work. I will start it, it will run at 500-800 rpm's for about 10-12 seconds & sputter out. If I hit the gas in that 10-12 seconds, it clogs out even faster. This goes on for anywhere from 9 to 25 repeats of this process. Then it will start perfectly, and run like a dream from there on out. It seems something needs to "warm up". It also seems fuel related and that's probably obvious, or not. That's why I'm here, as these things are built like a tank but I've read about all sorts of sensors n such & I'm rather baffled. Again it's why I'm here as I'm hoping to get some expert help/advice/opinions. My 1st Volvo & can handle basic stuff but by no means whatsoever a mechanic. Thanks in advance for any help!!
Mike

I think it'd be nice if people seeking help starts out with year/model/engine/FWD/AWD/trans/mileage info.
Something such as 1998 S70 GLT FWD auto 130K.

Right now, we don't even know your engine, mileage...

Stalling during COLD start possible causes:

- Bad MAF (any CEL codes)
- Dirty Throttle Body (search for DIY I wrote a while back, very easy with a few bolts).
- How old are spark plugs?
- Air Filter
- Fuel Filter (DIY in forum)
- ECT near the thermostat. If your tstat is still original, time to get new Tstat+ECT (there is a simple way to replace these, I posted in forum).

Do you have VIDA? Are any trouble codes being set?

Spark plugs are good to check, if you don't know when they were last replaced. Cold temperatures make the fuel less volatile, and harder to light off.

Possibly the temperature sensor that the ECU reads. It sounds like it dies with a transition from open loop to closed loop control, and with a bad input that might make it die until the engine has warmed up enough. (I'm guessing on this one, need to research more to be more confident.)

Check the fuel pressure at the rail. Probably not it, but free and easy to check, and good to rule things out.
