Well, the subject says it all...I have a 1980 242 dl, and the other day i started it up and it made this whining sound, not too high pitched or loud, but not good nonetheless. So, i drove it a little bit and then when i started it later it didnt make the sound. Well, i drove it the next day and the whining sound was back and at low revs/speeds the engine sputters and it feels like it could die at any moment, though it hasnt actually died yet.
Any ideas what could be wrong??
strange whining sound and sputtering engine

Check your oil first, the cams in these motors will lock up in the head if the oil isnt changed frequently. They will make a high pitched squealing sound and you will loose power right before it locks up.
It could also be your water pump, powersteering pump or AC compressor.
