2001 XC70 rear wheel intermittent lockup

Post by THolland » Sat Dec 21, 2019 10:52 am

Hi All,

Drove my 2001 XC70 2.5T to work and back (80 miles, zero issues) and picked my daughter up from work. While pulling out onto the road, I heard a loud 'bang' and the passenger rear wheel completely locked up, skidding us to a stop. Put the car in reverse, no longer locked and moved OK, then into drive and went about 5 yards and locked up again. I was 1 mile from home so limped home slowly with the wheel locking up about 4 times on the way. No errors codes were set, slight aroma of brake pad but the wheel/rotor was not hto at all. Tons of pad left, but have not pulled the wheel to look things over. The rear rotor are pretty rusted so might be a bear to get it off to take a look (plus it 20 degrees out!) The nature of the lockup is pretty severe so not sure if brake/caliper related, ABS related, AWD/trans related....? Appreciate any ideas on how to debug this one!

Thanks,

- Tim

If you aren’t getting ABS codes or service brake messages, it’s almost certainly parking brake shoes which have deliaminated and are hanging up in the rotor.

Volvo’s rotors come off pretty easily, Ben after long residence times

Are you one of The 3% who use your parking brake with an automatic transmission ?

OK, makes sense, but that 'bang' and intermittent hard lockup seems odd to me, just not sure where the EB pads would be getting in the works to create this random lockup (I would think it would be continuous...but maybe not?). I never us the emergency brake either so certainly very possible that this is de-laminated EB pads. Guess I need to get this into the garage....or look for a warm-ish day in the forecast! Thanks! -Tim

They completely fragment sometimes , and the pieces will jam up intermittently in the brake drum

See second page of this thread to see how nasty they get

Probably parking brake acting up.
Search for for DIY, I posed a DIY for parking brake a while back.
Buy only Volvo or ATE or Pagid pads.
Rotors can be Brembo or Zimmermann.

Sorry if this is duplicate, my first post did not seem to take?

Well, finally got the time to pull the wheel and sure enough, EB pad became un-laminated and must have jammed the wheel to lock it up. Sadly the first 'bang' I heard was a giant chunk of my cast wheel hub/knuckle being sheared off...that and the head of one of the brake back plate mounting bolts. Huge damage inflicted. I have posted photos to this google album - link below, take a look and share my pain! My question now is what to do. I need the car back but wondering what I should do until I can assess getting another part from a salvage yard or elsewhere. The part that was broken seems to be where the EB shoes leverage against when the cable is pulled, so the EB will not work on this side until I get this part replaced. Any comments appreciated. I am wondering if I should just replace the rotors and pads and leave all EB hardware uninstalled on this side, and put it on when I can work out the replacement? I never use the EB so no fear of unintentionally applying the EB during this period. Appreciate any guidance/words of wisdom! Thanks, Tim

Of course, you can also just leave that wheel without parking shoes

If replacing it, you need to pull the whole wheel hub from the salvage yard or get it online from Ebay (simpler) - not the correct part but gives an idea about the job (not exactly a fun one, just removing the spring is a job in itself) https://www.ebay.com/itm/VOLVO-S60-2001 ... Sw1T1d9qrW

Wire brush the break clean and J/weld that part back on. That joint will be really strong in shear.

Make sure your cables run freely and adjust the brake in at the cables.

You need a working parking brake to pass MA DOT
