Starter location on an S80 T6 3.2 L

Post by petera58 » Tue Dec 24, 2019 8:59 am

Hello,

Can someone please help me determine where the starter is located on a 2009 S80 T6 engine. I'm attaching a pic of the engine.

Thanks a bunch!

The starter is at the back of the engine on the bottom.

No problem

Are you replacing the starter?

My 2008 LR2 starter died at about 100,000

My 2010 S80 is on the original starter at 135,000

Take care

Yes, I took my old starter out to test it because I had replaced the battery on my vehicle and it wouldn't even turn over. I tested the starter with a direct hook up to my battery and a multi-meter and I was getting 12.5 volts to it but it wouldn't move at all.

The Land Rover LR2 was based on the Volvo S80 when it was designed.

I own the LR2 and S80

A LR2 link that shows the starting circuit

Note: the S80 has a different configuration but I suspect that it has the same components

Look at the picture in this link. https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic33546-15.html

The key things that would prevent the starter from turning

- Fusable link by battery + connection
- Starter relay (sends power to the starter solenoid)
- Fuse for starter relay
- broken starter (worn out brushes)

Good luck

So it turns out my AC compressor is seized up and that was preventing the engine from turning over.

That is a very unique failure.

I've read about clutch pack failures for the AC and the compressor on my S80 lost its ability to cool the car.

But I've never hear about the compressor seizing and the pulley seizing (or clutch staying engaged) and then the engine won't start.

I am glad to hear that you found the source of the problem.

Thanks for sharing

Thanks for all your help!

Now the fun really begins - changing out the ac compressor. My car is actually an 09 Volvo S80 T6 Sedan 4-Door 3.0L. I sent away for a repair manual from ebay that I'm hoping gives me details because I can't quite find the process for my engine on youtube or elsewhere. If those manuals work, I'll let folks know.
