V50 S40 engine swap- TCM not checked

Post by brushhippie » Fri Dec 27, 2019 4:06 pm

I am swapping the engine 2.4 and tranny from a 2005 S 40 to a 2005 V50..and have found a few differences. First was the cam position sensor..the S 40 engine lacked the rear sensor..the alternator is different and there is a sensor on the radiator of the V50 where the S 40 did not..( I had swapped the entire front core support as the trans oil cooler had failed and the radiator is full of oil)
OK.. so for the cam position sensor I took the sensor cam from the V 50 cam and bolted it to the S 40 cam and swapped the V50 valve cover....These are the things I have found.. is the anything else I need to look for here?..or swap out?
This is my first Volvo..after pulling the engine from the V50 first the S 40 took half the time..and other than having to change out parts the install has really not been that bad. I will admit I was a bit intimidated by it at first. Any help wou;ld be greatly appreciated..my wife loves this car..it running would be big medicine at my camp! :D

Both 2.4 non turbo or is one a T5 turbo and the other a non-turbo?

The two engines are identical with the exception of just a few items...the S 40 engine did have a header and the V50 a cast exhaust..but no turbos.

Then I think the differences are one is a SULEV and one is normal class emissions. One likely has dual variable cam timing and the other doesn't. Does the cast iron manifold one have a hub with a big Torx plug in one cam gear and the other is just a gear? Then the integral catalyst one has two hubs with the big torx plug?

The V50 engine is the one with the cast manifold and the duel cam sensors the S40 engine had the header but single cam sensor..I took the little sensor cam from the same camshaft from the other motor and bolted it on the end of the cam from the S40 motor and swapped the valve covers. The cams looked identical minus the sensor cam and big torx bolt. I am calling it a sensor cam..not sure its actual designation. You are calling it a hub?..I think we are talking about the same thing. Please excuse my ignorance of proper part names..and thanks for the reply.

I assumed since the V50 engine had the dual cam sensors all I had to do is swap that hub over to the other camshaft and valve cover of course. So the only difference in the two are emissions equipment..which should not be an issue. I had the engine back in the car before I noticed the differences in the alternators so I am in the middle of swapping them. What made me start looking around is once I had it all back together I tried cranking the engine but found it would not crank. I do not think the alternator connection would keep it from cranking (nor radiator sensor )but will have to get it back together to run the codes.

It seems the donor has no radiator sensor or anti tamper device..and I am not finding anything with the number on the part? The ones I am finding called anti tamper look nothing like what I have here
This did not have a probe just metal clips holding it on either side..once again assuming once the tabs are removed the device will not works..anybody have any idea why nothing comes up when I google this number..even tried it on Volvo parts sites nothing?

It does nothing but was only installed on radiators with coating that breaks down ozone. The sensor being plugged into the harness is all that is needed.
