'98 s70 GLT misfieing only on the first drive of the day

Post by clawfamily7 » Mon Dec 30, 2019 8:20 pm

If this has been discussed please point me in the right direction. I searched the forum and couldn't find anything related.

I have a new to me 1998 s70 GLT that I purchased a few months ago. I've done some work but can't figure out what is going on now with it. I have a CEL on with misfire code on cylinder #4. It only seems to misfire the first time I crank it up in the morning. It starts right up and runs fine until a couple of minutes after it comes up to temperature. Then it will start hesitating, just a little at first then pretty bad if I keep driving (the misfire). If I park it for about an hour I can start it back up and it will run perfectly for the rest of the day. It doesn't matter if I am driving 80mph, driving uphill, flooring the gas pedal, starting it warm or cold etc. it still runs great except for the first start of the day.

Work I have done so far:
replaced spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pump, fuel filter
Checked fuel relay (OK), Pressure checked wet and dry the cylinders (they all tested low, but nothing drastic between any 2 or between wet and dry), re tightened the spark plugs, made sure the wire plugs were pressed tightly into the cap.

Any suggestions of things I can try are much appreciated! I've been following robertdiy on youtube to help me get these tasks done. I'm learning as I go!

I've been looking and looking into this and FINALLY came across something seemingly unrelated (at least to this beginning mechanic). Fuel injectors! I'm going to unplug the fuel injector from cylinder #4 tomorrow before I drive it the first time and see how it runs. The injector may be the culprit. Any other ideas on what else to check is greatly appreciated!

I had the most bizarre cold running miss on my T5 a couple of years ago.

The vacuum purge hose between the intake manifold and the purge line T had completely separated into two rubber strips. The symptom was the car would cold miss for a few minutes, then there was a click and the car would idle smoothly. I would never believe such an account, but actually had an MVS witness.

Replacing the hose fixed the problem.

Thanks abscate! I unplugged the injector first drive today, no misfire! Just running rough from the injector being disabled. I'm gonna pull it and try to clean it with seafoam before deciding to replace it. I am so relieved! I've been terrified it would be something major that I couldn't handle.

It was definitely the fuel injector! I cleaned it with purple power, rigged up a 6 volt battery and cables to keep the injector open to clean through it as well with brake cleaner. That last part shot back quite a bit but it did the job! now if only it wasn't so windy and cold here I'd pull and clean the rest. It's all dirty around there from an oil cap leak from before I bought it.
