No Communications with REM, DIM, CCM, etc. I doubt it...

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on the Volvo S80 model. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was and continues to be Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car.

No Communications with REM, DIM, CCM, etc. I doubt it...

Vehicle:
2006 S80 (1st Gen) 2.5T FWD

Some background:
A few months ago I noticed the cabin air system was acting wonky: redistributing air to non-commanded locations, operating the blend doors randomly, not turning the AC off/on when supposed to. I took the car to my local Volvo dealership (I trust the service manager there) and was told I needed a new CCM. They quoted labor only at 250.00 USD.

No Communication Problem:
I wanted to gain some insight into Volvo module world so I bought a knock-off DICE unit with the usual bootleg VIDA copy and got it running on an old computer of mine. Poked around the menus for a bit and when I connected to the car I got this readout:
KIMG1867.JPG
I am a complete newbie when it comes to VIDA, but for all the world this seems to me that the CEM has no communications with anything rear of the engine bay. I find this hard to believe... Car does not have an illuminated Check Engine Light (CEL). All the lights in the instrument cluster illuminate when the key is set to position II, with the CEL staying lit for ~10 seconds and then going out. No SRS light, no ABS light, no red triangle warnings.

I cannot read any trouble codes from any of the modules in red shown in the picture, and the green modules have no codes set. Furthermore, I tried some component activation buttons in the DIM menu, (turning instrument cluster lights on) with no response, whereas activating the wipers at the CEM menu (which is green - has communication - in the screenshot) turns them on as expected.

I would greatly appreciate any ideas as to what is going on. Is VIDA telling me the truth? Does this mean I need to go hunting for a circuit problem? Or is this a CEM issue? Thank you for your time.

Everything to the right of the CEM is on the same CAN bus.

I would start by:
  • 1. Pulling and cleaning the connectors on the CEM.
    2. Check for evidence of water ingress on the CEM.
    3. Check for opens and shorts on the CAN bus.
    4. A electrical defect in any of the modules can pull down the CAN bus and prevent communication with all the modules.

Thanks for the tips!

I'll get at the module and start testing the connections over the course of this week. I can't have the car offline for the next 2-3 days, so I will start this work after that. Can I reconnect the battery with one of the red (eg the CCM) modules disconnected or will this set some sort of non-clearable (such as SRS) trouble code?

I have reason to believe the CCM is faulty, though short of disconnecting it from the network, (if it is pulling down the CAN signal as you said) I have no idea how to troubleshoot the module itself.

Update:

Messed around with the connectors on the CEM today. Didn't have enough time to get to all of them but from what I've seen so far I find this unlikely to be the problem. All the pins I saw were super straight and super clean. I don't have any water infiltration that has been present above the CEM on similar P2 cars.

Also disconnected the battery for a few hours and did the "position II reconnect" procedure. Now the check engine light blinks on position II before going out. I also noticed the ABS light flashing when VIDA was connected and reading info from modules, but much like before, there is no check engine light / ABS light / triangle warning / etc. when the car is running. No change attempting to connect with other modules.

I could get a breakout box and start diagnosing the CAN network myself, but I wouldn't know what to look for. I'm going to take this vehicle to a specialist next week and will post back if I get any more information.

Check for electrical opens and shorts, which are the most common things that can take down a entire CAN bus. A short could be the wiring or a defective module.
Thanks for the continued support! I'll keep poking around. My progress is slow, I've never done any electronic troubleshooting so I'm doing a lot of research up front. Like I said, I'll post back once I find something.
