My argument i guess is it's such a waste...
I agree with that. I understand it's a labor / cost issue, but it's frustrating to throw away all that fabricated metal, or find a recycler who will take it. Then you have the weight and shipping and fuel questions for moving products around the world.

Like bottled water?
Bottled, 5.6 - 10.2 million joules of energy per liter to produce and deliver.
Tap water, 0.005 million joules per liter for treatment and distribution.

The best part is bottled water is an unregulated and tested industry while municipal water is closely watched

I know a guy who imports bottled water from the atlantic island of the Azores to Vienna, the city with most probably the best tap water in the world. And while that moron is allowed to do that, politicians are discussing that just cars compliant to emissions standard Euro 6d should be allowed to enter Vienna. It is a crazy world we live in.

The energy content of petrol is 32 – 34.8 MJ/L.

5.6 - 10.2 MJ/L is equivalent to 16.185% - 31.875% of the volume of water in petrol.

Most estimate the average energy required to produce and deliver bottled water is 1/4 the volume of water in petrol.

1 liter of petrol to produce and deliver 4 liters of bottle water is a good estimate of the energy expended.

We have hard water here. We use a filter instead of bottled water for a fraction of the cost.

Sweet Jesus, is that true?

I was astounded to learn its about 0.5 Joule of energy per Google search.

1 Joule of energy is the energy contained in a kg ball dropped from 10 cm, (2 pounds from 6 inches)

5.6 - 10.2 MJ/L Midpoint 7.9.
32 – 34.8 MJ/L. Midpoint 33.4.
7.9 / 33.4 = 0.237 ~ 1/4

391 Billion litres of bottled water per year worldwide.
Energy expended is equivalent to 98 Billion litres of Petrol ...

Wow. Glad we never buy any! And then where does the plastic bottle go?

Our City water is quite good, from a deep aquifer.
