Xc70 transmission

Have a 2001 v70xc and had a complete failure of the transmission no movement any direction swapped out another transmission and car is running fine today I pulled the old trans apart all clutches look new no broken parts the filter has some metal on it but not too bad solenoid failure?looking for a clue as to why it stopped working

Your findings mirror the findings I had with my old XC70. I had all sorts of banging on shifts. I bought three similar transmissions for $50 that had failed. I took them apart to learn before I worked on mine. What I found was two transmissions badly serviced with black goo tranny fluid. The third one had the same plus a busted b4 servo. The rest was fine.

My belief is without the sign of a mechanical failure most of these transmissions can be repaired by servicing the valve body. Many times just the solenoids, but for the cost of the TransGo kit may as well do a rebuild. Especially on the 2001, the solenoids were known to gum up and stop working. These were updated in later models.

If you are curious, you can pull up some videos on rebuilding the solenoids, the back cap is ground off and the unit cleaned with a special size drill bit. You can do this with any drill bit that is slightly smaller to confirm that was your problem. First take a VOM to it to make sure it is not burned out. That will answer your question.

When I read the posts with failing transmission I usually recommend the TransGo, some SeaFoam Trans Tune and some MaxLife ATF as a possible $160 fix (not including time). If it works and you want to upgrade to the correct 3309 fluid this can be done later.

The other main problem these transmissions suffer is the internal filter getting caked up and restricting flow - usually the car will work for a short bit until the debris gets sucked up and stops the fluid flow. The fix here is to drill a hole and break apart the filter and then install an inline filter.

Have you installed a TransGo Kit before? I installed one on my 03 S80 T6 during a filter replacement and complete flush with a 3309 Compatible fluid. Snaps off the line and instantaneous response when passing. Startled me the first time I had to make a quick maneuver.

Yes I have installed them and found the instructions excellent and the results the same.
