Volvo plug life

Post by mecheng » Sun Jan 19, 2020 5:47 am

I have 85,000 km (52,000 miles) on Volvo oem plugs for my wife’s 97 850 - LPT.

Does anyone know if they are platinum and their life expectancy? The car drives perfect.

If they are running well at 52000 miles they are almost certainly Pt or Ir

I find my copper plugs are worn past gap at 15000 miles on my turbo

Volvo plugs for turbo engine should be platinum or iridium(single prong).

On my n/a i replace Volvo plugs(triple prong) at around 70k km as a preventative maintenance.

Spark plug life mostly depends on driving style(anywhere between 70k km-100k km).

My opinion is that you should replace them at this mileage before problems begin.

Here at my plugs on my E90 N52, they are rated for 160,000km, I took one out at 120,000km. Gap was close to spec
They are labelled as double platinum Bosch

Just from the picture....it looks like it have at least 2mm gap!!!
It seems high...even for a BMW.

If you are using Volvo plugs, then go by the maintenance schedule. My 2004 has a 60K mile change interval and I have never had any trouble with that using Volvo plugs. I drive the car hard and tend to floor the accelerator regularly. I also idle the engine for A/C purposes lots of hours a week. Back when my children were in school I idled the engine hours every school day. At 195K miles my car has never misfired and still has all original coils working great. June

As long as spark plugs are changed regularly....coil packs or a single coil will never fail.
The main reason for prematurely failed coils are bad or worn spark plugs...especially for DIS ignition.

I always use Volvo spark plugs(triple prong)from day one and never had a misfire issue.
Still original coil and wires....cap & rotor were replaced as a preventative maintenance around 280k km!!! with oem Bosch although they weren't showing any signs of failure.
I keep them as a spare in the garage.

Last time i installed Eyquem spark plugs(made in France)which are the same as Volvo plugs with same Volvo part# stamped on them.
Volvo plugs are also made in France for EU market cars and it appears that Volvo plugs are made by Eyquem and NGK.

NGK also have the spark plugs for Volvo(triple prong) with exact same Volvo part# stamped on them....at least for non turbo engine.
