Coolant loss V50i 2005

Post by Bubbathegreat » Sun Jan 19, 2020 12:47 pm

2005 V50i non turbo.

I'm new to Volvos. I loose about half a gallon of coolant every couple of weeks. and it is very intermittent. I cannot see where it is leaking from. it will only have a few drops around the engine and rest is on the underbody cover. (what's the proper name for that?) I have one hose that goes into the the firewall that is all bloated, but would it leak only sometimes? Any ideas as to how to find this leak? The oil level has not changed and is clean.

I read a post where coolant was leaking in the transmission.
viewtopic.php?t=47033 Could that be happening on my model?

Regardless I'm going to replace and the hoses just to be safe and at 165,00 miles. It needs to be done. True?

FCP Euro has a hose kit with the following: Is there anything else I should replace?

Hi, the hose going into the firewall is probably a heater hose. Do you have any signs of a leaking heater core? Stained carpet, foggy windshield, funny smell, or a general humid feeling?

Not in the cabin, just a slight smell when I open the hood, And an occasional 2x2 foot spot under the car. Maybe once a week.

The underbody cover is called the splash pan.
The transmission fluid can be tested (Blackwell is one test company) for coolant and other contaminants. About $20 and you will also find out the transmission condition.
These coolant leaks typically only leak when the engine is running and the cooling system is pressurized. You may see some white dust staining at the point of leak. Trace all of the coolant lines including heater lines to firewall. If it makes a wet spot, there is a leak. Radiator necks and end tanks are known to crack over time.
Intermittent leak might be because of drive time and coolant temperature peaks. Higher temperature equals more pressure causes more leaking.
