It is good to reset adaptation after valve body replacement, but not necessary. The car will drive ok and will slowly relearn on its own. Adaptation reset and then adaptation procedure will teach it to shift properly in under 40 minutes.

How do you "reset adaption"?

Thanks!

In VIDA (Volvo Dealer's software) using DiCE (Volvo scanner). Scanner was cloned long ago by Chinese, it is under $100 on ebay these days. Pirate edition of VIDA full of viruses comes on DVD with the scanner, but it is easy enough to find a good version in torrent. Look for 2014D, this is the latest version that works offline.

There's even already installed VMWare Player version of VIDA, google around.

One more question: I plan on going step by step, oild drain and refill to normal levels, then B4 servo cover upgrade from ipdusa.
I am reading "We highly recommend a transmission software upgrade".
That seems to be a different animal than "reset adaption".
How do I get that?

Thanks!

Dealer can do that. Or you can buy a 3-day subscription to VIDA Online and do it yourself (if you have DiCE). Total cost would be around $200.

@vtl - My apologies if I possibly repeat myself.
Found someone who will replace the B4 Servo Cover.
Question: This still makes sense when Error PO780 is displayed, right?

2-3 may slip if B4 piston is stuck for some reason. It makes sense to do it because it is cheap, relative to transmission replacement.

Honestly, the problem is likely somewhere else, either in valve body or somebody touched B4 anchor bolt on top of the transmission when he tried to replace ATF. This transmission does not have a filling plug, new fluid must go through dipstick. There's that bolt prone to be mistakenly identified as a filling plug. Touching it means no third gear anymore.

Thanks. I still have a third gear, just this brief slipping between 2-3 and seemingly 3-4.
Strangely enough, today the Check Engine Light has disappeared.
Sometimes this week the B4 will be replaced and the fluid level adjusted (currently too high according to a shop specialized on Volvo and Saab). Then we'll see.

Thanks again for your input.

I wrote an ATF Fluid in XC90 forum using Aisin ATF, totla cost about $60 if you DIY.

I'd start with a drain/refill x3 and see what happens before getting into the B4 thingy.

Just wanted to follow up, since things have changed.
The Volvo Specialists told me that the transmission fluid level was too high and that it was leaking from one axle.
While I was waiting for a garage to repair it, the error stopped occurring. Everything seems good now. Will have the leak fixed next week and have the guys take a look at the fluid level some other things that showed up (that I will ask in another thread).
