Engine number

Post by neilpatstone » Fri Feb 14, 2020 3:20 pm

Hi, I've just bought a Volvo V70 1997year I got it cheap because it has a leaking water pump but I'm struggling to find the engine number it's a 2.0ltr non turbo 5 cylinder 20valve engine, I can see where the number is but it's so well covered in oil and in such a place that it's almost impossible to clean, so if anyone knows what the engine model number would be that would be great as I want to order the new water pump.
Many thanks
Neil

Engine number is stamped on the block behind timing belt cover...just under valve cover.
The same number is also on the sticker on the timing belt cover, along with engine type(B5254S,B5204...etc).

Clean it with a nitro solvent or carb cleaner on a piece of cloth.

Thanks for the suggestions but the sticker is missing, I've already spent and hour tonight trying to clean it, so far I discovered just a B, it's in such an awkward space

Call a Volvo dealer with the Vin # and they should be able to answer your question assuming it is the original engine.

I know you cannot get your head in the space to read the stamping on the block.

My solution was:
1. Took it to a car wash and power wash the stamped numbers on the block.
2. Stuck my cellphone down there and snapped a bunch of pictures.
3. Flipped through the pictures until I found one complete and legible.
