Shredded serpentine belt into timing component?
Shredded serpentine belt into timing component?
Couple days ago my 2013 Volvo S60 failed while driving. Tow to the dealership who right away showed me shredded belt wrapped around the crankshaft. I left thinking I’d pay $200 for the labor/new belt and have my car back by noon. Next day he calls and tells me debris from the shredded belt got into the timing component and the whole front end of the car had to be removed/repaired or need a new engine, either way it is going to cost lots of $$$. Is this possible? The car has 93000 miles on it and the repair bill is right at the value of the car. Do I have any options other than to junk the car?? Appreciate any advice.

You are not the first this has happen to. Someplace on this website are other incidents. This is a Do It Yourself (DIY) website. Most of us would do the work and it would be worth it.
You took it to a Dealer. Dealers are always high. If you take it to a independent shop the cost may come down to something that makes financial sense for you. Go to Volvo Mechanics dot com and try to find a independent in your area.
New engine ... possible but not probable. Head rebuild ... probable but not definite.
Keep in mind no shop can tell you what it will cost until the damage assessment is done.
As for junking it, one of the members in your area might give you more then a junk yard will.
