Volvo 850 SL Solenoid

Post by Volvebaker » Thu Feb 27, 2020 10:56 am

Hello all!

I am in the middle of a transmission solenoid replacement. Has been a major pain :(

Anyways, I am well aware that the S1 and S2 solenoids were changed in later years (I bought two green and alas have a green and a black S2 and S1.

However, my issue is the SL Solenoid. This is the one I was actually doing this whole job for. Well I ordered the set and I have not found ANYWHERE that the SL Solenoid is different in years I was under impression it was the same for all years AW 50-42LE.

Well I got it out and the SL Solenoid I ordered (P/n 6843784) looks completely different from the SL I took out!

Including the plug being on opposite end  !

If this fits and plugs in will it work? Or is there another SL Solenoid for this tranny and where might I find that?

Thanks for any help that can be provided!

So it's been a long time since I did this job. Will the wiring reach to your new SL solenoid? If it does then I think you should be ok to use it. If not then you'll have to look around again and try to find the correct part. I don't know why suppliers have such a hard time getting the correct solenoids. In the end I decided to be done with the whole mess and just manual swapped my T5R. That's the only real solution :P

Thanks for the response!

Yes, it does reach around and it plugs in and mounts the same as the one that was installed.

Mine looks basically identical to the shot in your write up of the valve body with the new solenoids in. That is: black/yellow S1, green S2, and now a brown and round SL as opposed to the somewhat square and grey/green plug that was installed.

I'm just going to assume that this will work. Although it does not look like the one I removed, I cannot find one that looks like the one I removed anywhere online! Also, I have not found anything but one p/n for the SL Solenoid on aw 50-42le. So, I'm just gonna give it a shot. The one I took out did test bad on ohm meter.

I sure hope that it is compatible as I do not want to do this job again. Had bolt number 4 strip out on me which then led to the head twisting off when trying to extract it. I should've gotten a longer T40 bit to begin with. Live and learn but now I've got a bolt stuck in there and need to deal with that.

If I could find a decently priced manual transmission I would LOVE to do the same...

An update for anyone that may be interested...

Finally finished the job and, though the Lock Up solenoid looked NOTHING like the replacement, it seems to be working properly and the dreaded arrow is gone!

As for the twisted off bolt, my fix for that would have to be explained in another thread but as of now...no leaks 8)
