How to replace the lower/inner Timing Cover.

Post by bhgran »

I am currently performing my 4th Timing Belt replacement & all components behind the Timing Cover. The inner/lower timing cover is very brittle & pieces of the cover have broken off.

How difficult is it to replace this inner/lower cover? The P/N is 9135040.

Do I have to remove the timing belt, serp belt, etc to replace the cover?

Any videos or step by step procedure are welcome. I currently have the engine set to install the new belts.

Thanks,
Bruce

Looks like you will need to take off the Timing belt, Tensioner, Idler and Camshaft pulleys. You might need to remove the Crankshaft pulley. It does look like the two lower casing bolts are behind the Crankshaft pulley. Then unbolt the casing from the block.

Thinking about this because mine is getting brittle. Is it even theoretically possible to do this with the engine in the car?

I did this replacement quite recently on my S80.

Twice, as it turned out, because on the the first attempt I failed to notice that parts of the inner cover go behind the water pump flange, as it was clearly intended to be installed before the water pump goes in. The cover was being bent away from the engine by the pump body and would rub on the back of the exhaust cam cog.

I didn't care to remove my water pump, so I ended up hacking away bits of the cover until it would fit flush to the case. The fit is "floppy" to be charitable, but at least it isn't rubbing on the cog any more.

YMMV, of course, as that was a P2, but be forewarned that you may run into the same issue.
