Hidden oil/transmission gear oil leak

Post by subzerocarfanatic » Mon Mar 09, 2020 10:49 am

I finally have the C70 up and running and have d riven it several times, really surprised with the power this little car has since it is running properly now, i hope.
Only issue I have now is a leak, not sure if it is oil or transmission fluid from the manual transmission. It only leaks when i drive it so i'm starting to think the output shaft seal on the passenger side trans-axle where it goes in the transmission is the culprit. It hits the axle shaft when driving and slings it everywhere, i have went over every line from the turbo where all the banjo bolts have the 2 copper compression washers on each side and none appear to have even a drip. The oil level does not appear to be dropping according to the dip stick obviously I cant check the manual transmission level without removing transmission mount on driver side, jacking the car up removing the tire, supporting the transmission etc. I will pick up the new seal today and replace it and hope for the best, the most annoying part is the smell and smoke once the exhaust manifold gets hot and burn off the fluid being slung on it. Any suggestions??

All you can do is to clean the area up and look again where it is coming from. Axle seals are prone to leaking with age especially if the vehicle has been standing for any time.

If you can clean the area and get the leak again and post some pictures.

Can you still post pictures of the area as that may still give us a chance to help see the area affected. Sometimes that will trigger a reminder to someone who has had the same issue.

Appreciate you are working through several frustrating issues all at the same time.

Pretty neat experiment, what about the materials used, sugar etc,it won't hurt to pour that in the engine or transmission?

I chased this one for three years and it cost $5 to fix. If it’s engine oil, this is it.

I seem to remember us talking about this before and you mentioned the Turbo drain line, if it is just a drain/return line and it is not under pressure why does it only leak, (if that's whats leaking) when driving the car.I tried jacking the car up and running the car in gear while i layed under it to duplicate the leak so i could see it but the car wont let you put it in gear and let the wheels turn so i can do that, it makes a noise while in the air when i try to let the clutch out into first gear, like the limited slip/traction control senses the wheels are off the ground so no luck there.
When i was overhauling the entire front suspension and engine bay i changed the turbo drain line gasket,remember... i thought i had stripped the threads. It could still be a possibility though, but when i run my hand around it, it never has a drop of oil no where on it.

There is a gasket up top which seldom leaks, and an oring, thick at the bottom which leaked all over the back of my engine, only when running at speed. You can see the mess in my pictures and it doesn't seem to come from that spot at all.
