What style of radiator hose clamp do you prefer?

Post by JimBee »

Lower radiator hose blew off my 93 850. I thought the shiny stainless steel clamp I'd used there would be good. It was tight but apparently not quite tight enough and over a couple of years there might have been a little seepage around the nipple, enough to make it slippery. Then I suppose it was just a matter of time before the pressurized system pushed the clamped hose over the nipple ridge and from there it blew off.

I found one like this in my miscellaneous bin:

Does anybody have experience with this type? Any others that are better?

+1 with abscate on this. This is the original style of the ABA branded clamps Volvo used. Volvo here now sells cheap crap by comparison. Last time around when I needed then I tracked ABA clamps to a Marine supplier in stainless

Go to your local salvage yard and pluck them off any Mercedes Benz.

Actually, I got that one from the junk yard : ) along with half a dozen others in my miscellaneous bin. I hadn't used it because the wider ones seem so much sturdier, but while sturdy is good, the narrower ones might actually clinch the hose more tightly. Plus the upturned edges prevent cutting into the hose. Did you notice those clamps cost $ .05 each—if you buy a thousand.

ABA "made in Sweden" hose clamps are readily available from many sources. I recently bought some for about $4 each, delivered. I like the Ideal clamps also, but they are quite hard to find with a narrow band. It is, however, unsightly to see the rubber of the hose squishing through the slits which are engaged by the screw for tightening.

Or multiple vehicles in general...They all benefit from good clamps. :)
I'd buy a few dozen, at least, of varying sizes...
