99 V70 No Start, No Power

Post by PuntSpeedChuck » Thu Mar 19, 2020 3:26 pm

I have a 99 V70 XC and I am trying to track down this electrical gremlin.

I have searched the forums about no start conditions, but most at least have power when they insert the key. When I insert the key and turn to pos II nothing happens. No dash lights or beeping like normal, and of course nothing also happens when I try to crank it. My battery is brand new, about a month old and Iv made sure its charged. If I bypass the starter relay the engine turns over fine. I've tested to make sure the fuse box is getting battery power, which it is, and there are no blown fuses. All my battery cables and connections look good, as well as my motor grounds.

I do not have a key fob, but unlocking and locking the car seems to work fine, as well as the courtesy lights in the doors, hazards, and even the anti theft light on the radio.

Is this a key immobilizer problem? ECM? Bad relay, ground, wire?

Seem like the main system is not getting power when I insert the key for some reason. I just don know where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The usual suspects are:

For a 99-00 version:

1) Bad antenna ring (the thing around the ignition key switch on the steering column. They can crack, or often it is just age. Sometimes just removing it and cleaning the plug contacts is all it needs. Do look though for cracking of the plastic around the plastic ring.

2) The ignition switch itself has failed. Again age related issue. Junkyard or new replacement.

3) Have you actually looked at the 'B+' cable in the main fuse box forward of the brake booster (the kidney shaped one?)? Sometimes they can look fine and even the connector can be shiny, but once you undo it and lift it is it a melted pile of doodoo underneath it.

Yes it could be a immobiliser issue, but the antenna ring is the starting point for that.

So nothing happens at all when you turn the key? Might want to look into the ignition switch (electrical portion). Typically if it's an immobilizer issue (most commonly the antenna ring) it'll crank, but not start.
The ECM is rarely, if ever, the problem.

Thanks for the replies.

Is there anyway to test that the key ring or ignition switch it bad before buying a replacement? Maybe testing voltage?

That’s not the key ring if there is no power to things. Everything points to a the electrical part of the ignition switch

Correct, there is no power to anything. The key ring light actually works, which gives me hope that its fine. I guess I will try to find a new ignition switch. Thanks.
