'03 V70 Power Steering Reservoir

Post by Biggertuna » Sun Mar 22, 2020 2:49 pm

Hi - How do you tell if the power steering reservoir is bad? I need to replace the power steering suction hose; has some seepage on the connections. Wondering if I should replace the reservoir while I'm in there.

Thanks!

Seepage is common at the rubber hoses both at the reservoir and pump. The hose does wear inside - or the clamp gets slack, the fastest it to lift&empty it, chop 1in off the hose end, put back. Did so and no more leaks - also use the Volvo worm clamps with round holes.
Your 03 tank also has outgoing hose at the top, and inside there may be a small tube - if it's black plastic you should be fine, if it's a copper one, that may drop inside. Other than that no problems. You can upgrade if you want to the later reservoir with both hoses at the bottom - will need the hose to the pump, but it's not a big difference, it's just that it has a filter inside.

Yes, as above.
Also the caps tend to leak over time.

Get one here. Check the reviews, I left one correcting the description; specifically country of manufacture. Used to be $18, now $25 but in my case it was worth it.

The tell tale sign is that they bulge - if it is all nice and straight it is most likely the hoses as described above.

I bought a non-oem version, fairly inexpensive, and it has been fine for 5 years now. Knocking the entire area out is always a nice move - depends on your budget. It is minimal work.

I had the same issue, i first swapped the cap with no improvement, then swapped the reservoir and no more mess. The reservoir is two halves glued together and it makes a mess when it leaks.

Thanks for all the responses. Watched this video and the tube in the reservoir moves up and down. See content at 0:26-0:32; makes me think there's something wrong, but difficult to tell if the movement in mine is normal.
