Steering wheel moves/jiggles a lot over bumps

Has anyone had a very jiggly steering wheel over bumps? Mine moves quite a bit when I go over bumps and I'm not sure what's causing it. The car is a 2000 V70XC.

Do you just feel the bump or is it oscillating in your hands?

Lower control arms on these cars last about 100k in tough roads, that’s usually the first step in the suspension refurbishment

I'm talking about feeling the bumps through the steering, which is normal to certain extent, but the steering wheel moves quite a bit with the bumps.

1. Open hood.
2. Stand on side of car.
3. Fix eyes on strut mount.
4. Grab fender and bounce car up and down.
5. Repeat 1 -4 on the other side.

Is the rubber on one or both Strut mounts ripped?

The last three Volvos I bought all had ripped Strut mounts. One only had 110,000 Miles on it.

Choice of tire can affect this-

I also though there way too much road feedback through the steering wheel on my S60. Enough that it could drive me bonkers on a longer drive.

When I changed tires from Pirelli P7 (these had a super stiff sidewall) to Michelin T&H this tamed down dramatically to the point I don't notice it anymore, doesn't bother me, and seems an appropriate amount of tactile feedback through the steering wheel.

Both are LRR technology tires. I get just as good, if not a little better econ with the Michelins. Considering at the same air pressure the bottom of the tire touching the pavement on the Michelins 'balls' whereas the Pirellis did not it appears as though Michelin took a different approach to achieving LRR as opposed to reinforcing the sidewall to be super stiff as the Pirellis were.

The Pirellis were also considered an ultra high performance tire, whereas the Michelins are considered a 'performance touring' tire. UHP tires tend to be notorious for being ultra stiff and uncomfortable regardless who made them.

The guys all made good points. Think of all the parts that can directly affect the steering.

The rack is mounted to the front sub-frame. Check the rack mounting bolts are tight. Then check the 4 sub-frame mounts to see if they are collapsing or ripped.

The look at the tie-rods. Jack the car up and support it. Try and move the wheels while holding wheels at 3 and 9 position. Look at the tie-rods and see if there is any obvious slack or movement in the joints.

Then while the front of the car is off the ground check the condition of the control arm inner bushes and the ball joints. Look at the front tires and see if there is any obvious wear to the inside, outside and a 'wave' in the treads which will point to issues with all the above as well as the front struts.

The guys mentioned the front strut upper spring seat. The bounce test may show the split or ripped condition, as will putting a wrench on the top mount nut and carefully turn it. If it turns easily the top mounts have failed and will shortly allow the front struts to meet with the hood.

Lastly, check the steering knuckle, the steering wheel shaft bearing for play. Lastly check the upper mount for the steering shaft is not loose. I have had one of my cars which this happened to. You can move the wheel up and down on even with the car at rest.
