Hello I recently purchased a used XC-90 and after sitting for a week it will not shift out of park. I checked the brake lights and they did not work so I replaced tihe fuse and that did not help.
Then I replaced the Brake light switch and they came on, but the car still did not shift out of park. Does anyone have any thoughts on what would cause this to happen ? Would it be the shift solenoid which engages and unlocks the shifting lever ?

Won't help the underlying issue, but: https://www.youcanic.com/guide/get-volv ... -park/3560 Scroll down to your shifter type
Thanks for the update. I also bought an aftermarket Brake light Switch at advanced auto parts so I'm also wondering if that could be the issue. I will will look at removing the shift cover and see if there is anything preventing it from being released.

Does key turn all the way to POS II and shifter will not go out of P with brake pedal pressed or does key not get past POS I?

Probably something in here as well- https://forums.swedespeed.com/showthrea ... ost5796209
If you go to the top of the page to the SEARCH MVS window and enter "shift interlock", you'll find a bunch of posts on interlock and shift related issues across the models. Usually just a couple things, let's see what yours ends up being.
Edit 032920- typo and search MVS suggestion.

https://forums.swedespeed.com/showthrea ... ost2362263 , see the link in the link and the video for orientation. Not sure if what I wrote in 2014 is really correct, and I'm still wondering what the heck that yellow pin really does as I'm not 100% sure it's a bypass. Quite a few folk with gummed up solenoids over the years, if the key turns to POSII then put your hand over the shifter cover front left side and feel for the solenoid movement as you press the brake pedal. Brake switch is indeed part of the solenoid power path, good place to look since you suggested have an issue with the lights.

When this happened to my XC90, the solution was replacing the shifter claw. Hopefully it's your issue too, because it's a cheap fix. Check under the shifter trim... both the wood/aluminum and the silver shift indicator need to be removed, if i remember right.

I did see the earlier and it looks like it did not release but now I have other problems.
Hello all I had some setbacks today.
1. The Brake light Switch I tried to install broke when I tried to push it into the holder.
2. Then I tried to push the park release button and it did not work so I yanked it back and it came out of park. Then it would not go back into park. So I shut off the engine and pulled the battery cable.
3. I took the shifter cover off and tried to see what was going on. I then connected the battery, started the car, and pushed the shifter forward and it went into park.
4. I then shut the car off and keep in mind the brake light switch is not connected to the car. The old one is broken and the new one is broken. I then started the car again, the brake light came on with no brake light switch, and it now come out of park and goes back in.
5. Big question why are the brake lights on with no switch ?

HI all sorry to bug you all again, but my newest question is why would my Brake lights stay on if the Brake light Switch is removed ? Again I did yank on the shifter so it came out of park so is it possible I broke a senor somehow ?
The Symptoms are the Brake lights stay on and I can now shift it out of park. Then I put the old broken brake switch back in and the lights still stayed on.

Brake light issues fixed. It looks like the car comes out of park without hitting the pedal. So my question is what part prevents you from physically shifting the car out of park by just hitting the button on the shifter ?
