1238 code 2002 C70

Post by dobrosailor » Tue Mar 31, 2020 10:59 am

Installed new to me 107k t5 motor, same as came out. Runs great, but when I put the car in neutral, it idles rough. If I drop it in gear it smooths right out, put it back in gear neutral, it starts idling rough again. Seems to start and run fine. It’s not throwing any codes anymore but I find a pending code 1238. There are no intercooler hose leaks that I can find, I have double checked The vacuum hoses.

Code checkers say bad circuit on number two injector, I replace the injector no change. If I search this code, the Volvo forums say there’s a leak between the turbo and the electronic throttle body.

Ant thoughts? I need this car to pass inspection and I would really like it if it ran great as it’s an absolutely wonderful car in great shape. I put a lot of work in the motor, cleaned out the oil pan, you name it to get me a good running car here. Any help would be gratefully appreciated

Check the intercooler to make sure the plastic has not cracked, particularly around the inlet and outlet pipes.

Are you sure the ETM pipe from the intercooler is on fully? That can be a devil to get seated properly and tightened up. Hard to see but look to ensure it is level all around the ETM inlet.

It is strange though that the engine evens out when you put it in gear. Not sure your engine is 100% the same layout as my 2000 R but is there a small tube running off the elbow of the intercooler to ETM intake pipe? If so did you refit that?

I have run all intercooler plastic, vacuum and pressure hoses to ground, they are all good, so I tried changing teh MAF and it seems happy. I'm going to drive it today long distance and see if I can get the registers cleared before it comes back but things look good so far.
