How much is the cost to install software on a new DIM?

Post by charlitos1988 » Wed Apr 01, 2020 10:35 pm

Hello, like I wrote before, I have a S60 from 2003 with 123,000 km, my DIM is totally damaged and here in Peru is very difficult to get second hand car parts from outside countries because of law politics.

So sadly I must go the route of buying a new DIM from the dealer and install the software.

here the only dealer in all the country is charging me $1800 the DIM alone, but without the software installation, when I asked (by whatsapp) this information the dealer man said something like "the price would be known when the DIM arrives and the service area put the price".

BUT on the web I read that the process of downloading the software to the new DIM has a code number because is a specific "work", so it should have a price.

any of you know in reality how much this installation cost? and how much hours of labor are needed? (in total how much will it cost)

thinking about selling it:
because here my whole car (with a good DIM) could be sold at about $5000 at most. and without the DIM it goes to $3000 or even less :o

doing the numbers, if the cost of DIM plus the software is too much I should maybe just sell it like it is right now?

I'm totally

Repair Database: Can I Swap a used DIM?

If you can find a used DIM with matching numbers you are good to go. About a 10 minute job. Take note of now the difference in odometer reads is dealt with. Mismatched numbers is a crap shot. It may or may not work.

Can you not buy a used dim online?..maybe find a cheap s60 and use it for parts. I bought my 2002xc70 parts car online for equal to $250usd plus 300usd delivery,it was drivable but not insured for the road.

I would guess it's another $400 or more for programming. Replacing the DIM takes 10 minutes. I read on the other forum that you cannot import used parts from overseas, that's indeed a big limitation. Any chances you can get a used DIM locally? You can still drive the car with the bad one - careful to regularly inspect the coolant level, battery charge, fuel tank full, etc because you will see no warning messages. You will get an SRS message once everything will be fixed (cleared by Volvo or code readers)

I would personally hesitate spending $2000 for a new DIM, there will be other repairs coming up. The car has quite low km which is good - you also need to test the PCV and the intake air thermostat (see my channel)

Charlitos - reach out to the user 'yagger' here - he can often remotely program software on Volvo modules for a reasonable fee

Have you taken a look at this thread?

As skilled labor of this type is affordable in Peru I think you should call around and find a shop that is interested. Then print the post and bring it to the shop. You may be able to get the DIM repaired - here shops charge around $150-250.

the problem is I damaged it beyond repair because I followed a YouTube tutorial that said something to use "solder liquid"

I used solder cream instead and burned the green board internally.

then I went to an specialized Volvo trucks electronics shop(which are WAY more common than Volvo cars here), they studied the DIM and came to the conclusion the board itself was burned because of the solder cream.

they even said is a heavy risk to start the car because a misfire is possible.

so my DIM is beyond any repair.

I am unsure if the car will work with out the DIM, but Oragex says it will operate with a bad one. Hopefully he will chime in and answer your question. From what he states it sounds like you will lose all your information which the DIM is responsible for displaying, but the car will operate correctly. You may loose climate control also.

I suppose your best bet is to buy a used DIM and figure out how to get it into Peru. Whether that means sending it to a friend in Brazil or Ecuador or ??? and collecting it there directly or via a friend or having a friend in the USA bring it back with them when they travel. These scenarios are most difficult right now with the virus issue.

At the same time you should reach out to Yagger and ask him what he can do for you remotely if and when you source a used DIM.

without the DIM I can start the car, and drive normally. but here are the "cons":

1. permanent hight light beam.
2. no left or right turn lights
3. windows can't be opened or closed
4. no electric close to the doors.
5. no alarm
6. no close all the car with the key.

for me the WORST are number 1, 2, 3.
specially the WINDOWS thing.

I used to drive with open windows because that's how I learned to drive on my 1983 Volvo 240, no air conditioning. just wind to breath and cool.

also in an emergency could be fatal not being able to open windows.

Not going to fly. Used Auto parts is on Peru's list of Import Prohibitions. Electronic equipment is also on the list. He would need to source a used DIM in Peru.
