2007 S80 Parking Brake Cable Replacement

Post by Skymongrel » Thu Apr 02, 2020 5:16 pm

Ok, throwing this out to you all. I discovered that my parking brake cables on my 2007 S80 are toast. Both cable are rusted and frayed at the fitting where they come together under the car. This car has a manual parking brake pedal. Does the cable still run through the center console or along the door sill? Do I have to replace cable all the way to the pedal? Any advice for how to replace this cable is appreciated.

Runs under front and back drivers side door sill then under rear seat.

Four cables in the system.

Four! Wonderful. Any idea where the junction of the cable #8 and #14 is? Just wondering how much inside trim I need to take off. Diagram is great. Appreciate it. I need to get Vida!

Tried to pull up carpeting in rear seat area. Impossible! It has a very rigid backing that can not be folded. It seems that my parking brake cable does not go under the door sills but heads toward the center console. I am just able to stick my fingers down into the stiff carpeting to feel this bending direction.

Is it possible that the third cable in the diagram posted previously above, connects near the console area to the fourth cable that goes to the pedal? Posting a picture of the failed end of the third cable that joins the left and right cables.

OK, so in preparation for new parking brake cables arriving in mail soon, I started removing stuff in the car to find out where my center rear cable connects (number three of four cables).

Doesn't go under the door sills....doesn't go through the center console...it goes directly from the driver side rear seat, under the driver's seat and connects with the fourth cable (that goes to the pedal) right in the middle of the driver's floor well. Your left foot would probably be sitting right on top of the parking brake adjuster gizmo while driving!

So taking into consideration all the stuff I didn't have to remove, I would say that to replace the center rear cable;
1. Remove rear seat.
2. Remove door trim along carpet both in front and in back.
3. Remove pillar trim between front and rear seats.
4. Remove front seat. Since seat belt is attached I left seat in car and placed in back seat area out of the way.
5. Remove center console trim just below center console and along carpet.
6. Remove hood release and trim.
7. Remove door trim that runs vertical and parallel to hood release trim.
8. Remove driver's carpet. The parking brake adjuster and front center/ front rear junction will be exposed.

Everything that needs to be exposed for installing new cable should now done. I haven't actually installed the cable yet.
More fun to come but shouldn't be any surprises except for the tricky adjuster socket/barrel.

BTW when I removed my driver side carpet I found the floor to be very wet! So now I'm also troubleshooting for leaks.

Re: 2007 S80 Parking Brake Cable Replacement  Topic is solved

Installed three new parking brake cables; left, right and center rear cable. I was surprised to find out that the junction of the center rear cable and the front cable, which I refer to as the coupler bracket is directly under the driver's seat hidden beneath the floor brace (not in the middle of the driver foot well...that's the PB system adjuster).

One screw and a clip holds the front and center rear coupler bracket in place. Remove the two hold down floor clips for the front cable to allow it to move freely, remove coupler bracket screw and slide the bracket to the rear to detach the clip, slide the bracket forward from under the floor brace to expose the cable coupler. Detach the old center rear cable (which I'm replacing) and attach the new one. In the attached picture you can see two yellow collars, one for each cable. These are fitted to the bracket.

I've included a picture of the parking brake system adjustment socket\barrel gizmo. I played with it a bit but didn't adjust it as I didn't know how the new cables would behave. This adjuster affects the action of both brake shoes and the PB pedal travel.

On my car I had the "H" bracket on the LH parking brake shoe system and a star wheel adjuster on the RH parking brake shoe. I left the RH star adjuster alone, but did adjust the LH brake shoe using the threaded cable end and the collar nut in the plastic cable junction coupler! I didn't take a picture of the new one, but if your's looks like my rusted one then you might need to install a star wheel adjuster on the LH side too!
