Anyone ever replace the carrier bearings on CV axles?

Post by Richard99 »

Has anyone ever replaced the carrier bearings on CV axles? If so, how'd you do it? I am suspicious they are shot and making some noise on my 2000 V70XC and I believe these are an often overlooked item.

There's only one on the passenger side axle Easiest thing to do would just be get under there, unbolt the two (12mm I think) bolts on the holder, and spin it and see if it's good. Honestly, I kinda doubt that would be the source of any major noise, but this car still surprises me sometimes.

What kinda noise are you experiencing?

I'm experiencing a constant whine noise. It's a higher pitch than what I had with a bad wheel bearing with my 98'. I'm thinking it's probably coming from my angle gear but not sure. Second guesses would be a wheel bearing or carrier bearing.

I've sort of gotten started on an angle gear rebuild which I got from another car. I'm hoping to weld it to the angle gear splines like others have done. Also not sure how difficult it will be to replace the bearing and seals on it.

When did you last service the angle gear?

How many miles now? Mine started whining ~140-150k and I flushed the living crap out of it and it became tolerable. I'm at ~188k miles at this point. I know I need to do it again or get prepared to rebuild a donor.

Just shy of 125k miles now. I'm planning on rebuilding a donor right now. I will document my experience and share what happens.

I have had 2 axles with bad carrier bearings. Removing then is a challenge. Volvo does not really do this anymore and there is no bearing listed by Volvo as a replacement sealed bearing for the 99-00 carrier bearings. The one for a 98 is still listed and is the same part. I tracked down bearings in Turkey following a lead from abscate. They were for a Ford Transit if I recall.

The local dealer managed to remove the bearing. I fitted the new one using a length of metal fence post that was the same diameter as that of the bearing.

To remove the bearing I have read of people breaking the bearing off by splitting it.

Thanks, Neil. If I discover that the carrier bearing is bad, I was planning on cutting it off with a dremel, tedious as that may be. I will try to track down a new bearing if I find that my bearing is bad.

Maybe do most of the cutting with an angle grinder instead?
